... wine about 10:30 in the morning! The small towns we visited were so quaint. In Durnstein they were preparing for May Day by raising a Christmas tree on top of a 20 foot log. We arrived when they were attaching cables preparing to raise it....went to do a little wine tasting and when we returned they still didn't have it entirely raised! ... Lake District and the lower slopes of the alps. This area is very picture postcard beautiful even at this time of the year. We stopped at 2 of the more than 40 lakes in this area, Lake Mondsee and Lake Wolfgangsee. On the shores of Lake Wolfgangsee is a town called St Gilgen and there is a look out above the town which makes for wonderful viewing, famously used by Robert Wise in the opening scenes of the Sound of Music.
