Sapa and being mobbed ...

Up early and off to the national park to do some trekking. Not quite ready for the onslaught as we got out of the van to set off. Hien said we would have some new best friends and indeed we did - we were surrounded and followed on our journey! Our walk was to cat Cat home of the Black Hmong tribe, really lovely people if not a little persistent! One ladies hands were very black, Hien explained it was from the dyes they used to make their clothes black. Nic got the best deals and a few friend...

Sapa

Sapa is beutiful. It is like a completely different world altogether. Here the ethnic minorities of vietnam live - the hill tribe people - mainly Black and Red H'mong Dzoa and a few others and it is only 45kilometers to the Lao boarder. We arrived in the mist of the early morning after a relatively uneventful train ride from Hanoi. The other 2 bunks in our cabin were accupied by an Aussie couple originally from Newcastle but now living in Melbourne who, incidentally, had also been accosted by...

SAPA

Today is the second of our stay in Sapa and we will be leaving in a couple of hours to make our way back to catch the overnight train from Lao Cai back to Hanoi (first class of course!)  I would dread to travel Economy! As has been the case for most of our trip the weather has been very much against us although we've had two tours to seperate villages adjacent which were really enjoyable.  The first was Ta Phin home of both H'mong and Dzao minority groups.  They live in extremely basic condit...

... 4.30pm and I was exhausted, so had a little nap! I managed to get up in time to see the sunset, and that was the signal that dinner was being served. We were joined for dinner by our guide (who cooked it all) and the head of the village and his eldest son. They told us we were the first tourists to visit his family in over 6 months, as it is one of the harder treks so not many people like to do it. We then tucked into the grub, which was delicious (especially the beef ...

The hills are alive...

... frowns on their dirty faces. Poor man, it just wasn't his day.... maybe i should've given him some rice wine with a reptile in it for luck or something.

Though Pierre was skeptical about Sapa, we are truly glad we came here as it's tranquil, beautiful and clean. We met some very nice natives who are very restful, and got away from the hectic pace of Hanoi. When we get there tomorrow, we'll edit this entry and the last one to add some photos of the areas we visited.

Trekin amongst the hill tribes

12th September
Train arrived at 5am and we caught the connecting bus to the town of Sapa. The bus journey was straight up a mountain but the views were incredible. We went to a hotel where we showered, had breakfast and deposited our big bags in a locker before setting off with our little bags on the trek.
Sapa is really cold, not surprising really as it is on a mountain Mei loved it and didn't have to hide from the sun once. There were ...

Among the Hmong

... was mistreating him with a stick. Hell hath no fury like a ****** off Hmong child with a stick in his hand.

I had heard that Cat Cat was pretty touristy, but if you could just get over the ridiculousness of Hmong people selling USB cards and ice cream, that the sights were worth seeing. So I worked my way through it all, saw a pretty cool waterfall and a beautiful river. I had scored a map at the ticket booth on the way in and it showed a trail heading out West of ...

... by a group of native H'mong women. They are dressed in an indigo blue tunic and skirt with felt that wraps around their legs up to their calves. Some also wear a cute little round hat over their hair that's pulled up into a bun on their head. Most of the women are adorned in huge silver pieces of jewelry and earrings that pull their lobes down so far you can fit a walnut in the hole.

Essentially the H'mong and Tzao natives (the Tzao are dressed ...

Amazing week in Sapa, Vietnam

... Chai lives with her parents and lots of siblings just a few miles out of Sapa... much shorter bike ride! With the money she's made as a trek guide, she's built them a hut down the road where they can sell water etc to tourists trekking past...
