So, while I was happily soaking up all the elephant love I could, Jeff was still in Bangkok and did a day trip to Kantchibury for the bridge on the river Kwai tour and the JEATH camp. Depressing to be sure, but historical and interesting as well.

Feb 26 - Today we got up early and visited the Grand Palace complex, absolutely beautiful, …

Flying home for Christmas :-)

I would like to say that our departure from the beautiful mountain house went swimmingly. But in all honesty, it wasn't without problems. The first one raised its ugly head on Friday night, the night before our departure. Tilly wanders into the bathroom for an innocent comfort break before bedtime and runs back into the bedroom panic-stricken, …

Just chillin'.....

no sight-seeing today, just chilling by the pool in 30degrees (bliss) which we promised ourselves we'd do to get into the rhythm of the trip before we leave for Cambodia on Monday. Fabulous infinity pool at the Chatrium looking right up the Chao Phraya river. Maia and I remembered saying 'this time next week we'll be in Bangkok' when we were at …

one day in Bangkok ..... and the world's your oyster - well that is definitely true. Today was our last full day here, and we're sorry to be leaving and have promised ourselves we'll be back - and soon. I prefer Bangkok to Singapore and Hong Kong as major international cities. The Thai people are so friendly and calm, relaxed etc. The pace is not …

Living in the Bubble of Luxury

It's got to be unsightly, for staff and guests alike, to have a couple of backpackers come walking into the lobby of their luxury hotel. But there we were anyway, grimy shoes with dirtier feet inside them, sweat-soak shirts and filthy rucksacks. When Elenka plunked down a copy of our reservation it didn't matter to the desk …

As a family of 5 (2 adults and 3 children - of which our eldest at 12 is classed as an adult) we can not recommend the Chatrium enough. They have been brilliant from the start. We arrived an hour later than we said we would because our pre-booked one-way transfer with bangkoktransfer.com didn't meet us at the airport (it was pre-booked and paid for). When we did arrive the hotel were very pleased to see us and the day manager came out to welcome us. The hotel is in a fabulous location, right on the river front which creates a much needed breeze in the heat of the day (and night). The hotel is spotless and very relaxing. Huge comfy chairs and sofas everywhere, and always plenty of people (staff) around to ask for help and advice. The pool is gorgeous and a welcome sight after a hot day sight-seeing, and in much demand by our children - bribed with a swim at the end of a day of temples and monuments. We had a 2-bed suite which had a huge lounge area and small but adequate kitchen with fridge etc. With 2 bathrooms it was much easier and quicker to all get ready (and needed with a fussy 12-yr old girl too). We used the free shuttle boat to Sathan Taksin pier a lot, where you can take the Skystrain (BTS) or other boats up and down river. Its only 4 stops from Siam Square - which we left in a hurry - the back-streets of our local area and the back-streets around the Golden Monument, Grand Palace and Tha Tien are much more interesting and cheaper places to eat and drink - you must try the street food stalls

I'm a big fan of Serviced Apartments, especially when your traveling with kids. So I booked the 2 bedroom apartment for our stay. I couldn't fault anything. The apartment was a good size particularly the master bedroom. The swimming pool was awesome, and their resturant devine. We had the buffet dinner on our 2nd and last night, and wanted to eat everything. The staff were friendly and helpful. They provide a complimentary boat to take you to the nearest river boat taxi stop, which is only 10 mins away. All in all, I can thoroughly recommend the Chatrium and my family and I all wished we had stayed longer.
