Lost in Translation

I find myself feeling fairly confident with French especially in the safe cocoon of school. Then, I try to have a spontaneous conversation with the rest of the world and it does not always translate. Over dinner I told my housemother that I used to be a man(was trying to tell a childhood story). She paused for a moment before just roaring with laughter while trying to clarify what I had just said.
