... interested in visiting the Cypriot capital of Nicosia, known as Europe’s last divided city since 1974 when the Greek Cypriot National Guard ousted the president provoking Turkey to send troops to protect their interests on the island. Since then, a Green Line has divided the Turks in the north and the Greeks in the south.

Just What I Was Looking For

And to think yesterday my biggest worry was not seeing anything interesting at all in Cyprus. What I saw today absolutely blew me away and had everything I look for in my travels...it was gritty, raw, real and not sanitized for the tourists. To date this is the most fascinating stop on my world tour. I didn't find any natural beauty or spectacular ruins but what I did find is a pretty amazing human interest story. I feel kind of stupid now worrying about ...

Its not longer Greeks or Turks that run this place

... is certainly a great place to vacation in the early fall. Late October and early November was still quite warm to our standards, but the tourist season was over for Eurpeans so it was a good place to vacation as it was moderately priced.

Our wedding - FOR THOSE WHO COULD NOT ATTEND

... massive sombrero for photos. There were more photos later when the sun had set as the ruins of the abbey got lit up with orange lights which is stunning. Everyone was having a ball, or seemed to anyway. The place looked magical and I was just thrilled as thrilled could be!! The band finished around 11pm and then everyone started to go home which was perfect timing because David and I were shattered anyway. We were supposed to be collected by a limo to take us back to the hotel ...

... DAYS IN KAKOPETRIA

Relaxing week, enjoying my 2 hour walks in the afternoon, not knowing that a week later the whole area where we live in Greece would catch fire, and our house would have 13.000 euro damage!

We left Cyprus urgently, and flew back when my son announced what had happened. We caught the first flight and return urgently to Athens ...

Also we visited the Roman Odeon (see the photo) from the 2nd to 4th century where musical concerts were given, and "Saranda Kolones" Castle built around 1200AD after the Frankish conquest of Cyprus, but destroyed by the earthquake of 1223 and never rebuilt. Friday 5th January We have hired a car for the next three days, so are off exploring, and a visit to the Temple of Aphrodite near the village of Koukila is a must when visiting Cyprus. It ...

... had a week. I felt naked. Without a guide book, it felt much as it would have been backpacking, years back when guide books didn't exist. What a different travelling style that would have been. I didn't envy those poor *******s travelling around back then. I surely wouldn't be on my 21st country without all of the help I'd received from Lonely Planet and friends. I initially thought I would be able to handle it without a hassle but I soon found out how hard it would be. When ...
