In the morning we went to see the Devil's Post Pile near Mammoth Lakes. These unusually shaped rock fingers resulted from cooling lava, millions of years ago. We went over a pass at 9,200 ft and down to the post pile at an elevation of over 8,000 ft. It was 36 deg F when we got there at 9:30am, but a brisk walk at that elevation soon got the heart pumping.

... t have opened the gate. We decided to turn around and on the way passed about ten others driving in so they would have had to turn around too. All up I think we lost about an hour which was unfortunate as we were hoping to have a shorter drive this time. If we have left on schedule we would have come to the first closed gate and turned around a lot sooner. About another hour we in we came to the next alternative. But that road ...

... up driving almost to Vegas, just giving him back the wheel at a rest stop about 1 1/2 hours out, handled the driving well even if i do say so myself. And speaking of rest stops Australia could learn something from the yanks - big rest stops, really clean seemingly in the middle of nowhere, with vending machines selling cold drinks, hot drinks and ice creams, australians could also learn a few road manners from the yanks ...

... I should have followed them LOL! I decided to follow the trusty GPS, which led us to the Stanislaus National Forest. The initial drive of the forest was great, but before long, this drive did not turn out to be a casual drive. I was on the edge of my seat, and had two freaks outs during this drive.
