Choose your room carefully

I've stayed at this hotel numerous times, and each time have been satisfied. The rooms are always clean, the bathrooms spacious and great showers.

On a few occasions, I've been placed in the suites overlooking the courtyard, and those have been fantastic. If you can, request a room on the courtyard, and you'll be very pleased.

The pub is a waste, but the restaurant has great roast beef and Yorkshire pudding on Sundays.

Super staircase

from veron
super location as expected. However room not ready by 2pm promise, dealt with well though. Walk in shower never worked over 4 days despite reporting to concierge. Excellent breakfast with less hassle at weekend than in some London hotels. The cleaners did seem to have a problem in the general areas of the hotel, there was this absolutely super staircase with a half drunk glass of orange left on it for at least 18 hours! Overall rating has to be only average for price.

FANTASTIC!

We booked our five-night stay at the Thistle Charing Cross through Priceline. I was a little worried given the reviews, but I am happy to say that we had a great experience at this beautiful landmark hotel. Our room was small by American standards, but everything in England is small by American standards. The room was, however, extremely comfortable. The bed and bedding was high quality (large down feather pillows, duvet, soft white sheets and a comforter cover), and the furniture was modern, new and clean. The bathroom was also recently upgraded, and had high quality, modern fixtures and amenities. The shower was super... with good water pressure and good temperature control. The towels were a bit rough, but they were large and perfectly white. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. On top of all this, the hotel could not have been in a better location for us. It is right on top of a tube station - which is KEY! (don't worry, you can't hear the trains). It is also walking distance to Trafalgar Sq, the National Gallery, the London Eye, the South Bank Center (national theatre, national film, philharmonic/symphony, free concerts etc...), Thames river cruises, St. Martin-in-the-fields cafe (great lunch spot, or brass rubbings), Soho, tons of restaurants, theaters, Coven Garden etc... Talk about "location, location, location!"After our five nights here, we moved to the Sheraton Park Lane (to use Starwood points). The Thistle was hands-down the winner over the Sheraton (talk about a waste of those hard-earned points - I'll write a separate review about that dump). I have stayed in a LOT of hotels, and would come back to the Thistle Charing Cross in a heartbeat.

Great family outing

located accross fom Tralfager Square and on top of subway terminal this was a great choice with all four rooms nice and staff very pleasant. Do not get taken where you convert your dollars to pounds.

My favorite London hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
My family and I have stayed at the Thistle Charing Cross on each of our yearly London visits since 2000. I have nothing but good things to say about this hotel. The location could not be better. It is in the Charing Cross railroad station, thus one is steps from the tube at Charing Cross, as well as only a block or two from the Embankment tube station, the Thames, Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery. Most West End theatres are within walking distance. From this hotel we have walked up Whitehall to Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament and across St. James Park to Buckingham Palace. We have stayed in both executive and deluxe rooms. My favorites look out on the Strand with a view of St. Martin In The Field's church. It is noisy if you keep the windows open at night, but that's part of the charm of staying in the heart of the city. The breakfast room is beautiful as is the lobby. Contrary to the info contained in a previous posting, there have been no sofas or blackboards in the lobby during our stays. The breakfast buffet of hot and cold dishes is ample. Hotel staff are pleasant and professional. We have been charged between $225 and $325 per room per night.

You get what you pay for

I stayed at this hotel because I got it for an incredibly cheap rate on Priceline. My first room was somewhat small. After I checked in and had unpacked, I was taking a shower, when the phone rang. The manager informed me that I had been given the wrong room and would have to move, as a large group of teenage girls had made a reservation. I said they would have to upgrade me then, and to their credit, the hotel did.

I was moved to a larger room that was quite nice.

The lobby, however, still looks like a dorm lounge, with a big blackboard set up against a few shabby sofas. The hotel doesn't seem to have any porters, so you will have to carry your own luggage.

Definitely not the four stars that Priceline insists it is, but a decent cheap bet.

Not so good

from A TripAdvisor Member
I had a 5 night stay here in December 2003, and was not that impressed.

The first room I was offered was tiny, while the second was bigger, but the shower curtain and blanket had nasty stains from previous guests.

Poor shower pressure, and uncomfortably saggy beds.

I would not rush to stay here again: it was sold to me as a 4 star hotel, which is simply not accurate.

Well worth the Money

For 150 pounds a night, this place is a steal. One block from Trefalgar Square. Inside is absolutely stunning. The pub is not worth going to but the restuarant is terrific. Free breakfast was terrific. Service needs improving, as we continually had to call for toilet paper, towels and wash cloths.

The best location in all of London

from A TripAdvisor Member
While visitng London this summer, we stayed here in (I think) an Executive room for 10 nights. It was a friendly atmosphere, and the location could not have been better. Excelent, the location. However, being there for 10 days wasn't very good. No gym or pool, and we had a view of the generator or fan or something. They did have American outlets, for tourists, and had water heater things for tea and coffee. There were no dresers por anything, so I had to unpack my clothes in the small dek. Yes, even the large super-nice room in whcih my aunt and uncle staed didnt even have any dressers. Thgere was an iron and board, and a tower heater, hwich only heated one little stripe on the towel. There was varely no door on the shower, I can't explain, so water would gte all over the floor. Also, to watch a certain of 4 movie-channels on the TV cost 7.50 pounds for one day. There were *** TV stations, and there were other problems with the hotel. The only thing good about it was the incredible location, and the pretty-consistant friendlyness of the staff. OK hotel, but wouldnt stay there again, but it wil ge hard to find such a great location!

Refined, almost exclusive

Had a very pleasant 2 night stay here. Rooms were impeccable (even the 'standard' rooms). Bathrooms large and very nicely fitted.

Food excellent - very large breakfast choice, and many seats (no queuing even when busy).

Location is couldn't be much better - right on a tube station (no noise) and in walking distance of most of the popular attractions. Nightlife right on your door step.

We stayed near the front of the hotel though; I believe there may be rooms to the rear that aren't of the same quality. However these may have been refurbished by now.
