40 days and 40 nights

... once every 7 days. It must be constant work for hundreds and thousands of workers, as the tea surrounded us as far as we could ride our scooter and then some.
The British established the tea plantations in the early 1800, and since then people from Tamil Nadu came up to provide a workforce and being a very remote location, they have built ropeway systems to get food up to the mountains and mini railways and phone systems and the tea just grew, providing a steady income every 7 ...

Birthday Treat in Munnar

... How they managed to climb and pick on the practically vertical slopes is a mystery to me.

We took advantage of Olive Brook where we were staying to have a truly relaxing time out of the heat and invested a day of schooling as there was lots of room and good desks for the kids to work at.

After three glorious nights we took the bus back down to Cochin, picked up the shoes that Isobel had left under the bed, and then went to the station to catch the train further south.

Bodhi Zendo

... br>
Bodhi Zendo is located inside a private farm, St Joseph Agri Farms. It is 2KMs from the main gate of the farm. When going from Coimbatore, after crossing the Perumalmalai village, you will see the farms gate to your left.

There were 13 participants in this mini Sesshin. I found out that the December Sesshin was already fully booked. Also found out from a western lady that Kurinji travels charges INR 2,000 only from Coimbatore airport to Bodhi ...

... have weighed about 50 tonnes. Eventually a bulldozer turned up and helped out and we were back on our way after about 5 or 6 Indian guys had had their photo taken with me "the token whitey with blonde hair". Arrived in Munnar Valley and explored the tea plantations and took an early morning trek up a mountain during sun rise, reaching the summit at about 10:00am for breakfast.

The Cockroach Express into Southern India

We finally drag ourselves away from the beers, cocktails and general Western vices to move Southwards along the coast, destination Kerala. A local train some 400km into the next state, Karnataka. The train's at 1500 they said. But get there at 1400 they advised. It may be early. Hmmm. The timetable at the station reads 1547. It came at 1700. Nice few hours in the baking sun to prepare you for a fully loaded 3rd class carriage for 8 long hours. Featured a full on fight ...

Kerala at its best - Spices,Elephants, Weird faces

... had been the first irish visitors - seems hard to believe. We went for a wee gander into the massive tea fields. Had to watch out for cobras that may linger amomg the roots. Only women pick the tea - appartenly according to the men (india is like a country with just men) - its an easy job. It all looked tough enough cutting with big shears millions of tea stalks in the searing sun. Later on we went to a place in the forests ...

Half way through the project

... i have an arranged marriage? The girls and boys sit on seperate sides of the classroom and the boy will get suspended if he is seen talking to a girl. The girl gets a warning and has to write a letter of apology. Doesn't seem fair for the boy! Apparently this happens often. I asked them if they were going to have an arranged marriage to which they all said yes and they were quite happy with this. Even the Christians have arranged marriages. Will write again after the weekend. LOL XXX
