Patna, Bihar, India rakeshibow4th April We waited at the bus station in Roxall (Indian Border Town) until we were able to get on the bus to Patna which left at 9pm. Typically it was the least comfortable of all the buses heading for Gaya that night but at least it had a TV I thought. The video wasn't the latest American blockbuster unfortunately, it was some bollywood rubbish consisting of 75% high pitched wailing and 25% very high pitched wailing at full ...
Patna, Bihar, India garyjampot... the middle of the highway. This looney bus would get us to Patna, a large hub city in the Bikar province, where almost no tourists visit. We had already heard it was one the most dangerous areas of all India from the lonely planet and people in Nepal, a main reason for few visitors. But then on the bus more people started warnings us to be careful because it is a very dangerous town...awesome, tired, smelly, with all our ...
Patna, Bihar, India arikandcharis... logical streets. Shimla: B+. Because it's in the mountains, there aren't a whole lot of pushy rickshaw drivers. Varanasi: F. Does not play well with others. See above. Scheduled to be renamed Verynasty. Bodh Gaya: A. Cheap with lots of fun stuff to see. What's not to like? Patna: D. Probably not fair, as it's just a stop on my way to Nepal. And thus my trip in India has pretty much come to an end. Next up: Kathmandu, Nepal.
Patna, Bihar, India waynekreger... along the highway. We were heading to Gaya, a small town 4-5 hours away from Patna. It was a rough drive and the local cursed the government all through the drive. Watching 40 people clinging onto a standard jeep became a common sight. We were diverted by few peasants since a bridge had collapsed down the highway and this added another hour to our rickety trip and the road got worser. As the milestone read, Jehanabad ...
Jehanabad, India akash.sahu... from the bus, Paul from Holland also joined is, even though he was not robbed, but he had a small video on his camera of how many people there were on the bus. We were taken by jeep to a place that kind of doubled as a Police station, but seemed more like a small wharehouse/dormitory. There were some half naked dudes sleeping, others ******* about 6 feet away from us, and some uniforms hanging. Some guy, not in uniform, with weak English started a conversation, asking what ...
Patna, India mrewkowski... im staying here for another day! The cricket was on the TV so im making the most of it. Patna, India stubo... and a local NGO to whom MVF is giving technical support. Technical support in this case means one man, Srinivas, who has been with MVF for a decade. He arrived on the scene about a year about at the request of ActionAid who is providing funds to the local NGO. Basically, the local NGO has been working on Dalit and women empowerment. They have run surveys and have also worked on enrollment of Dalit children in schools. The main problem they faced ...
Samastipur, India bgleixner... of immortality. I'll exit with a quote: "Yes, that is where it happened, in the palace of the widows on the shores of the Ganges in the oldest living city in the world, the city which was already old when the Buddha was young, Kasi Benares Varanasi, City of Divine Light, home of the Prophetic Book, the horoscopes of horoscopes in which every life, past present and future is already recorded." Varanasi, India longwalktour... chaos can only result in one thing- death. Two trucks swerved to avoid each other and killed a few pedestrians. The trucks overturned, blocking the road in both directions. Mayhem was not the word!!! We were seriously frightened in the car and the driver told us to keep our doors locked and heads down as things could get lawless. There were hundreds of people walking about shining torches into cars. It did not look like we would make the train but that was the ...
