... thankfully our ticket was accepted and we arrived in Nanning at dusk. Our hostel, the Green Forest, was hopelessly difficult to find - a big thank you to Lonely Planet for the most useless map in the history of cartography - so we stayed in for dinner; and ate like we'd never eaten before.

... at 09:30-10:00 ish, but for the Vietnamese one at midnight was a bit more irritating when we had to get up at 04:45! The Vietnamese passport control was also ridiculous. Instead of doing the passport checks on the train, everyone got off and gave their passports to a single guy, who didn't check them. We then waited round with our bags while the passports were checked. The Chinese passport holders (the overwhelming majority) then seemed to get shouted at and quizzed ...
