... We arrived at the first lake and then encountered snow. The Squadra kept pushing on till it became obvious that only pierre, flinty, james and Steiners being the only ones who had hiking waterproof shoes could continue to the end. it took over 5.5 hours with stops but was fantastic. ... dominated by the train station. It handles 1 million passengers a year (many are students), roofing slate and scrap metal from the adjacent steelworks. The result is ugly, maybe reflective of the fact that until 2002 it was managed by military railway engineers! It reminds me of Newcastle or Woollongong circa 1970.
We can see Mont Blanc from our roof and plan to get closer to it ...
