... I found a seat and a clean table and sat down. An Asian waitress approached me. I looked around, all the waitresses were Asian. A famous French cafe in the heart of southern USA, nothing authentic about Asian waitresses. I order from the limited menu. Coffee and the French pastries; They came in 3s. Almost as soon as she left, she was back again with my order. I didn't tend to carry too much cash on me so I handed her my card. No good, cash only. I look ...

... a new waterway, just filled it with silt and sludge. Rapid and unexpected changes in river water levels ended up causing the project to be abandoned. Vicksburg would have to be taken by force.

The site of the canal was obviously across the river, under the freeway. I followed the signs and up a narrow road that was once a highway, I found what was left of the canal. Really it just looks like a long irrigation ditch. It being long since filled with earth ...

... Not that any of the assembled were Cajun, but it's Mardi Gras and this was one more in a series of festivities I'd been part of which were deliberately counter to the prevailing practice of standing alongside parade routes and screaming for beads and swag from the guys on the floats.


Anyway, after the mystic circle ended as all good religious services do - with food, though this was a decidedly unkosher ...

We saw quite a few turtles sunning themselves in the pond area, Matt saw his favourite animal (leopard) and a couple of others high up on the list - jaguar, white tiger.
