We arrived in Hanoi in the early evening we were quite tired after Halong Bay. We had US$6 for dinner as we were getting money out the next day. We found this place it was not what we call a restaurant. It was in the middle of a road with plastic stools and the kitchen was completely portable - the meal was great! Hanoi is an extremely busy place, the traffic is chaotic you don't wait for the traffic to stop for you to cross. You just walk across the road and the bikes, cars and trucks will s...
Hanoi, Vietnam happytravellersI've been in Hanoi for about 10 hours now and seem to have done a lot already. Flight was long but not too bad - must have slept some of the way - and there is loads of leg room in Thai economy - recommended. No problems left at Bangkok airport and a quick change to the flight to Hanoi. There are dire warnings about airport taxi scams here but I must have struck lucky (or careful) and made sure I got the official taxi queue and got a driver who brought me right here for the right price ($15)....
Hanoi, Vietnam hsaToday we leave Bangkok and take a short flight to Hanoi in Vietnam. This is the mid point of our trip and marks a sea change. We have spent the last 3 weeks on our own and in some quite nice hotels. For the next weeks we're joining a tour of Vietnam and Cambodia. The tour is run by Explore Worldwide who we've used quite a few times before. The group will be up to 20 people with a group leader, the hotels are typically 2-3 star and you usually spend only 1 or 2 nights in each hotel - this real...
Hanoi, Vietnam shaneandsarahAfter a lazy get up we decided to go for a walk to explore the local area and to find somewhere for lunch. Walking the streets is a challenge - most of the pavements have large trees growing out of them (it's the French influence, tree lined boulevards), there are people selling things on the pavement, many of the "proper" shops spill out onto the pavements and the pavements are also used for parking mopeds (millions of them). And often the pavements are used by moped drivers as an alternativ...
Hanoi, Vietnam shaneandsarahAnother day, another chance to get mown down by a scooter when attempting to cross the road. This morning involves a tour of some of the cultural aspects of Hanoi. First stop is a temple that neither of us can remember the name of. Compared to some of the temples we've seen of late, this is a small place and is dedicated to the northern guardian of Hanoi. Then it's off to see the mausoleum of the man himself - Mr Ho Chi Minh (the founder of modern Vietnam). We couldn't see him as he is closed...

... for variety) or 2) People only eat what they sell for breakfast. So if I’m craving a delicious plate of freshly made banh cuon I have to get my butt out there early.
These women transport their goods to “market” via two baskets suspended from a bamboo pole hung over their shoulder(s). Many take the bus then walk the distance from the bus stop to their chosen locale. The “market” can be anywhere they choose, as in the "alley ...
... a second to see which way we needed to go and all of a sudden pineapple lady has her baskets and hat on Greg, I took a picture then she put 3 pineapple bags in Greg's hand, so being polite midwesterners we obliged, you have to have a sense of humor in this country. We walked to Ngoc Son Temple which is on an island in the lake, it was just ok, supposedly a "getaway" from the honking...yea, not quite. We thought Thailand and Laos was hot until we ...
Hanoi, Vietnam trizzyb... The tomb itself was a bit eerie. There were guards everywhere, each holding a gun complete with bayonet and not smiling. You're not allowed to talk in the tomb and the soldiers position you where you should be standing. They even told a baby to be quiet! You walk through the tomb, Ho Chi Minh is lying there, almost looking like he might get up at any minute and then you're out the other side! It's very strange, and sad as well because his dying wishes were to be ...

Hanoi,, Vietnam andrewsl... of mountains, terraced crops, maize, cassava, tea, rice, fruit trees and hillsides, tropical forests in the sun and, in fog and clouds!
Absolutely magnificent and most importantly, we have virtually no tourist thumbnail in 8 days, apart from in Sapa, more accessible from Hanoi.
