Ringing the changes for breakfast - Jerry had the continental (all kinds of cheese and meat and a particularly odd looking sausage) and I had the French (bit of a shock when you're expecting a croissant and it's full of chocolate, but managed to struggle through more than I should).

And I realised who the restaurant guy is - he's the creepy man you'd expect to open the front door if you visited Dracula's castle! I haven't seen him smile at all, but now suspect it's to ...

The weather looks much better today thank goodness.

Good omlette for breakfast, and then set off to walk around Old and New Nessebar, the old town is out on this promontory across a causeway from the mainland and the new bit. And they are very different.

Gave up and bought a cup off tea in said restaurant where the only problems were the over vigilant owner making it difficult for me to eat the cake I had smuggled in ...

... had. We also shared a tasty tuna salad and some garlic bread. By the time we finished lunch it was past two o'clock, so after buying postcards, we headed back to Sveti Georgi. This church was built in the 19th century, so although there was a lovely picture of St George & the Dragon over the entrance, the interior looked newer than that of Sveta Bogoroditsa, and wasn't quite as atmospheric. I didn't notice any signs of celebrations apart from ...

Roman baths and the Varna Gold Treasure

Our bus to Burgas didn't leave until 15.00, so we had all morning and early afternoon to explore Varna further. Our destinations were the Roman thermae (public baths) and the Archaeological Museum.

After breakfast we checked out and put our rucksacks in the hostel's luggage storage before heading out to the thermae. These ruins are expansive and well preserved; enough of the walls survive for the layout of the different rooms to be seen clearly - the changing ...
