... and I share one. We then stroll along a lovely market selling a lot of interesting things. It looks similar to Newport market in the types of things on sale. I bought a beautiful sterling silver ring and had a broken English conversation with the stallholder who designed the ring. I really enjoyed Lugano and would come back here again (already planning my next trip!). Our next stop for the day was Lake Orta, back in Italy. I hadn't heard of Lake Orta before; it ...

... stone walls and trails I come across along my climb. Old sheep pens perhaps? Relics of another era, when people actually tried to live off of these rugged mountainsides? Finally it's time to make my slow descent, reminding myself that if I keep making wrong turns like this, I'm never going to make it to Switzerland. But I do... again... I love how my travels become so interconnected... my Alps hike is now connected with my Egypt adventure of ...

Day 274 1 hr, 1 km With the steep, wooded mountainside to my left and a valley that is quickly narrowing to my right it's only a few hundred meters and I'm in the next town, Messe. I know that the uphill climb is getting close, including my big goal: to cross the Splugenpass from Italy to Switzerland on foot. I know it was just planted here for the warm months, but seeing a banana tree in someone's yard just feels really unappropriate. C'mon folks, this is the ...

... anyway to get up there... Gordona has a very different feel to any other town I've been in. Why? Well, it's a fairly large, urbanized town, but at half the buildings are look like old, stone and timber barns! It gives it a rugged farmer feel--I guess here at the end of the day people would just bring their animals into town to keep in their barns. Kind of a cozy feel. Some of the barns are in disrepair--but you can still see that a lot of love went into building ...
