... Apparently, most things close pretty early there and I was told the hostel had a 11 pm curfew (made me feel like I was back in High School). I walked over to a local Tempura restaurant for a decent meal and then back to the hostel (8 people per room, not much privacy, not very social). I decided to get to sleep early (not much else to do) so I could wake up for my big date with Mt. Fuji.

... to do in – well, ever, or nearly ever. Such fuzzy and beautiful looking creatures, and so dexterous with their hands to pick up treats and bamboo for their lunch. We could have spent hours watching them! But that probably would have annoyed all the people behind us in line hoping for a look, too. So we had to move on, and spent the rest of the day playing spot the lion / tiger / condor / otter / owl / monkey / Hokkaido brown bear / ...

I climbed with 2 American's, Jeff and Nath. Jeff was fully equipped (which turned out to be very helpful), whilst Nath and I looked more like pathetic backpackers. Our outfit was crunched together with everything our backpacks had to offer for such an adventure.

We started off happily with a bit of rain and apart from our three head-torches in total darkness!

... front door saying, " Hiking mountain today. Fuji." And our day began. We arrived at the Fifth Station of Mt Fuji mid-morning. As the mountain is only open July through mid-September, visitors flock during the short climbing season. I learned on our trip that it is the most climbed mountain in the world. Most hikers start at the Fifth Station as well as the place most tourists visit. It was crowded and developed. Restaurants, shops, buses was all that could be seen ...

Left our capsule hostel at 6am to get a direct bus to the start of our trail, Yoshida 5th Station (about 2.5 hours south west of Tokyo. Started hiking at 10am Surprised at how much 'climbing' was required rather than hiking. This is definitely not a trek you just decide to do there and then. Made it to our mountain hut for the night called Fujisan hotel before any other guests arrived. The temperature was much colder than what we've been used to. Bunk beds in the mountain hut were like ...
