What a night !!!! James didn't come in till 1:00. I was kept awake by the terrible thumping of the train, which not only hurt my back but was bad for the nerves. It felt as though the carriage could fall over ! Up at 3:30 remaking my bed, and again 4:30, 5:30 till woke at 8:00, which had become 6:00 with time change. Neighbours were all up and out at a station stop. At the new 8:00 I dressed in the warmest clothes I had and breakfasted on Nescafé, nuts and pills. ...

Yep, we have been gone for 7 weeks, or approx. 1/10th of the time we expect to be away.
We arrived in Nizhny yesterday, and it is HOT! Even I have resorted to a sunhat. We took the option of a cheap hostel near the railway station. The rooms are tiny, but we didn't have to carry our bags far. Yesterday afternoon we walked as far as the bridge across the River Oka, which then merges into the even larger River Volga. ...

... a couple of American films but couldn't understand how we were both going to be able to understand it until I suggested subtitles. He had no interest in reading Russian subtitles (all films are dubbed here, yet I still go to the cinema in each town to ask if there's anything in English), so we watched a Russian tv movie that is watched every New Year apparently. The city I am in now, is the 5th largest one in Russia, with 1.25 million people. It is along the river Wolga, my first impression: very beautiful.
Had not a chance yet to make pic at daylight, looks nice at night too.

... except for the nice cafe downstairs. Upstairs the hostel was clean and comfortable. The proprietor Anton was a cool guy with a sweet Russian mullet. He showed us around the place and we quickly settled in. The "unique" part of this hostel was the shower in the kitchen and single toilet. Soon I met the babushka that was apparently living there temporarily, she was crazy. She kept trying to speak to me in Russia, not quite understanding ...
