We're in Burgundy drinking Pinot Noir...

Yes it is true. We worked our way up to Beaune, and just like in the Rhone, have not been dissapointed at all. We explored the tiny towns of Pommard, Volnay, Mersault, and Satenay, and got to try some amazing wine from all places. We even tried a place in Pommard and then headed over to his son's winery in Mersault (the son's was actually better than his Dad's stuff!) The only word of caution if you come wine tasting ...

A weekend in wine country

... station we could understand that played the same few songs every hour. I was very happy to finally be back in Paris and riding the metro home! I don't think I will be making any road trips any time soon.

Beaune was a beautiful city despite the weather and I would highly recommend to anyone thinking about traveling abroad to take a day or two and see the country instead of staying put in a city. Its not always the easiest option but definitely a different experience.

Dijon is not playing fair

I only stayed for one night here because there was nothing in particular that I wanted to see, I just came to see what it was like. I caught the train back to Paris and had to use a different train station because Paris has several, all of which have trains going to certain places. My metro ticket should have expired but the other morning it had worked so I tried it again. After a couple of goes it was accepted, Yes! Machines can be foiled, and then 'stole' my way to Gare De ...

Update from P and D

... France Passion" of this trip. Barely had we rolled to a halt at the Domaine Michel Guitton when a lady of the establishment was out to meet and greet with the offer of a 'degustation'. We accepted and, once inside, were presented with a list. First was Petit Chablis at 8eu a bottle. Next was Chablis at 10eu followed by three others going over the 30eu mark. We asked to sample the 10eu bottle, duly produced from a cool box. very nice, we said - we'll have ...

All the way to Burgundy

... which was lit up quite spookily. Beaune is a place we would definitely like to come back to and to explore properly.

We only had time to walk around a small part of the town, but it seemed quite sleepy: the bars were closing up at about 10.30pm. We trooped back to the campsite and had a late beer sat by the Bongo. Toppling into the van to sleep we were both shocked at how warm it still was - sleep seemed ...

Last day in Dijon

... was that he asked us 'what am I a monster?'. Well the answer is yes but we kept walking. Clearly we avoided something much worse than being yelled at. Might have saved others because he made such a spectacle of himself. So we get to the hotel and it turns out that the only science geek we were going to dinner with was the organizer of the conference and his wife. We went to a fancy restaurant. You know the type...cloth everything ...

The Jorney to France

In our attempt to leave Luxembourg, we discovered that there were only two trains to Dijon; one that had already left and one that would put us in Dijon at 9pm. Since we only had one day in Dijon the 9pm train didn´t appeal to us. So we decided to use one of our precious buffer days and go some where else for the day. I looked at what trains were leaving the soonest and found that a mere 30 minutes away lied a very historical city in Germany ...

Life on the Anthonia

... what a great time was had. Our first dinner was prepared by Janet (5 courses) taken in Anthonia's wheelhouse: How this barge was ever going to stay afloat with us onboard was beyond us! The next morning we had a rather rushed departure as the hotel barge La Litote was behind us gearing up to go and Malcolm wanted to get in first "Not that I'm competitive or anything". Was his comment. To be fair, La Litote is 10 metres longer than ...

BB and CC. The French Connection

CC and I went off to spend a week in France, including 2 nights in the smallest Hotel room in Paris. We travelled Eurostar from London into Gare Du Nord and then walked down to our Hotel in the Opera area. My friend Vince from Adelaide had given me a Collins phrase and picture book which was a godsend and helped me through times of my bad French. Our first 2 days included visits to the Champs Elysees and wandering around the city. We were ...

From the Loire via Dijon and the Jura to Genève

... No cycling - other than in and around Dijon I breakfasted with my Danish inter-rail companions, who set off in search of some rural French life by hopping on the local train. I guess city fatigue was starting to set in, that's when they all start blurring together. I left my gear in the tent and headed into the town centre. Dijon is a vibrant, accessible and interesting town. It was the capital of Burgundy until in 1361 when its ruler ...
