... weather came up from the south, like the Santa Anna winds out of the valley to the sea at home - and the seaside had no cooling breeze from the north. We did at least get our feet in the channel, and that helped a bit.

The Somme is an incredibly beautiful, rural, peaceful area. Somehow what happened here nearly 100 years ago, knowing what it was and remembering it, makes the peaceful, lovely present all the more poignant and precious.

Well it was a pretty non eventful day. The train was the same as all the other. Arriving in Lille after only an hours ride, I found my way to the hostel, only a short walk from the train station. This will be my home for the next 5 nights. Checking in, I head back towards the train station to find a car to hire for 2 days. Euro car had one for two day for Wednesday and Thursday. ... metro. the metro should pay the hotel to put in triple glazing and airconditioning at the frount.

Last night there were loads of Police in town in full riot gear, yes I did pay my bill, also army with big guns. Mind you this is an army town with special forces out at an old fort (16 century).

I had my first icecream of the trip yesterday, lemon sorbet so sharp it makes you pucker up lovely.
