My Gateway to France

... time to sightseeing). I may see its open and obvious attractions, but I won't be here long enough to appreciate what it might have once stood for. I will be here because a greater purpose will lure me in. I will be here because I want to see the battlefields.

We write a lot about the Somme...all of them really. And we must be pretty convincing, because up until I started writing, these battlefields, as key and - dare I say - fascinating as ...

... A third brother, James, had also fought at Fromelles but had been injured. What a horrible tragedy for one family. The last two exhibits broke my heart. The first was the ID tag of a soldier. By that stage I had somehow made a friend. Some random dude approached me while I was ...

... then David (after his run) joined us. They are an interesting couple with a good sense of humour and they were going to have a BBQ at the end of the jetty where we were moored. We were invited to join them to put our meat on with their rack of lamb. It was a very pleasant evening.

We wanted to see Mons but you had to walk back to near the Aldi to get the bus and that was half way or a taxi was €10 each way. In the end we didn’t go, which was a ...

Lille and Skegness - common ground

Hi all,

A few weeks ago we ended up in Skegness for a night, and couldn't remember why we booked there. Well, it's happened again. We travelled from Amiens this arvo and arrived in Lille to steady rain, and we don't remember why we booked here.

The only reason I can think we booked here is that we needed to change trains in Lille to get to Ieper in Belgium, which the French and us usually spell Ypres. In any case we're in a comfortable ...
