I have the worst luck with public transport. Seriously. We were told the train to Brasov left at 8:20am. We got up with plenty of time, stopped for breakfast and snacks at the mini-mart, and made it with time to spare. Or so we thought. It turns out the train actually left earlier, and by the time we got to the ticket counter we only had two minutes to purchase and get to the furtherest platform. In other words, not enough time. ... fatigue hit this afternoon so I spent a large amount of time with my feet up. This is the first time I've been to a place without any accomodation organised in advance, but we found a nice hostel fairly easily. I'm also struggling a bit with my diet over the last few days. My body has finally gone "OK Jeff, what the hell, I'm refusing to process any more burgers until you get some self control." This means today wasn't ...

What a neat city! We didn't have a great first impression, since the taxi that took us from the train station to the hostel tried to charge us the equivalent of $120 for a 7 minute cab ride in the Romanian currency (we ended up paying 10 euros which was like 5x too much anyways but better than 100!) Fortunately, things only improved from there, and we had only positive experiences with cab ...

... an important role in its liberation from communism during the revolution in 1989. We rode around the city making lots of stops along the way. Like any European city, we marvelled at the enormousness and detail of the churches. We went into a couple - one catholic and one orthodox. We also saw two of three synagogues in the city. At one point, there was an important and decent sized Jewish population here, but that has dramatically decreased. Only ...

BL #28: Visit a Romanian Construction Site

Timisoara is known for being one of Romania's most beautiful larger cities, full of pedestrian zones and green spaces. It isn't always high on the list of destinations for tourists to Romania, but became a stop out of convenience for us - reasonable trains and buses to Romanian from Belgrade can be a bit tricky, and since GEA Tours also offered a Belgrade-Timisoara shuttle, it made perfect sense for us to stop a night here.

    Luckily for ...
