    ... and it is now the starting point of the Main-Danube Cana, that was built between 1960 and 1992. One of the few cities in Germany not destroyed by WW2 bombing, Bamberg is the largest Old town to retain jts medieval structures, because of this it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Along with its Gothic, baroque and Romanesque architecture, the city was laid out according to medieval planning rules as a cross with churches at the 4 cardinal points.

    ... has to have the local bratwurst roll, a pastry and cappuccino, we feel obliged to support local tourism.

    After lunch we had an historian on board discussing for an hour the background and challenges to the European Union. Very interesting.

    Following this was the compulsory nap, followed by tea and then no doubt another late night drinking ...

    ... by the late hour of the afternoon at that point in time, The Benedicts, Hildrun and ourselves hit the Autostrada straight for Bamberg. Where we saw beautiful buildings and lovely flowers and people watched as we wandered.

    We finished our German touristing that day by a highly appropriate dinner in a traditional Bavarian beer garden which was simple and simply lovely. Many sad goodbyes and we were heading home to start packing for our trip home the next day.
