... hill, pretty nippy today with low cloud cover. We got back to Allemont by decided to stop for an ice cream then do a lap around the lake. Quiet afternoon with showers and a load a smelly washing, then we went out for dinner as we have no gas to cook with. We both had pasta in bolognaise sauce. Mat found a rock climbing wall which he was pretty happy ...

Rest day at Allemont

A travel blog entry by eyork on Jul 29, 2015

We left our beloved botchy field, filled up with petrol and drove around the corner to Allemont. We hunted again for gas, or some way to make it work, but no luck. Again. Not very happy! Not only with the gas, but also troubles with the fridge and 12V powerpoints. Baguette for lunch, set up the van with electricity and went for a walk. ... again, 1st time for him here.....4 stage wins this TdF. What happened to Cavendish? I reckon he has shot his bolt.

Dinner tonite was at Les Bouquinistes down near the Seine. Superb dining here. I had a Gazpacho for entree followed by Cochon (Suckling Pig) and 2 desserts (they made a mistake). First dessert was a cherry sorbet number followed by a rich chocolate, praline log.

Enjoyed them immensely.....nice bottle of St.Joseph too.

... stage..........the French are in raptures!

The pub we had been going to every night prior to dinner ran out of beer so we had to drink with the drunken Dutchies up the road.....are these guys ever sober on Alpe d'Huez?

Shelly cooked up a great Beouf Bourginon for dinner.

Quiet night tonight everyone is too tired.

Tomorrow we all say farewell to Alpcycles and Alpe d'Huez

... not in the forecast.

We unloaded the vans about 7 miles from the start of the climb. Our whole group, all dressed in our new Thompson jerseys, jumped on the road. As we pulled up to the start of the climb thousands of cyclist and thousands of fans were heading up the mountain to find their spot to watch the race. The first 1.5 miles of the climb are pretty steep with an avg of 10% incline. To give you some perspective, 10% is approximately the pitch of the hill ...
