My trip to Dingle in Ireland

... facilities such as ensuite bathroom, multi channel TV, radio, DVD and CD player, direct dial telephone, modem access and other services coupled with the best of hospitality. The food served in breakfast was of very good quality and was very yummy.

We planned to go for a tour of the city and visited the Connor Pass which took about 1 ...

The Skellig Islands - An extraordinary experience.

... bird mass I have ever witnessed.

You need a dose of Irish luck to even make it to the islands. Trips run at most 100 days of the year. The boat ride out on a calm day is enough to make the average traveller seasick. I can’t even imagine the size of the waves and swells on the 265 days of the year that it isn’t safe to venture out to the islands.

Boats generally leave ...

A Little Bit of Heaven

... so proud of myself for figuring out the directions to the fort, which I knew John would enjoy seeing. It was Fort del Oro, which was the scene of a British massacre of 700 Spanish, Italian, and Irish who rebelled against Queen Elizabeth in 1580. The road ended at a stone monument with no signs, and the fort was just couple of grass embankments. Oh well!

We stopped back at Louis Mulcahy’s pottery studio because we were hungry and they had a caf ...

Driving the Dingle

... drive continued through small towns, stopping at other beaches, braving the wind and rain to look at a lovely sculpture at Brandon Creek, and a futile search for a fort John wanted to see. Our car was also attacked by a dog, and that was interesting! It was close to noon when we drove back down into Dingle for lunch.

Six tour buses sat in the car park, and their occupants were out searching for lunch and souvenirs. We went into Murphy’s and found a table in the nearly full bar ...

Moving On Down the Road

... quintessential Ireland--everything that is associated with Ireland is here, and it’s absolutely beautiful. There are castle ruins, over 4,000 years of history, vibrant green hillsides, tall brown mountains, monastic sites, cliffs, forts, and the beautiful ocean. We drove the peninsula with the Slieve Mish Mountains on one side and Dingle Bay on the other.

We wanted to walk the beach at Inch, which is almost five miles long, but ...

... scenery, apparently the area has the highest concentration of prehistoric sites in all of Ireland if not the world. I think we have seen our fair share of rocks now though, they all look the same. Good photo ops though. Tomorrow we have a big drive ahead as we leave County Kerry for County Clare. and to the tiny village of Doolin. I'll be back

Dingle Town!

... pool table in back it felt almost like a teen center. The place has stone walls and dark wood everything, fit with tiny wood tables and all. It's like a model of a fairytale cottage at Disneyland, but real. It's hard to accept that we're actually IN Ireland, not just some reproduction. There's a shelf with empty jugs and a bust of JFK above a Guinness stained glass window by the main door! For ...

Kenmare – Dingle – Kilrush

... we were off on our merry way again. In addition to the thickest of thick accents Kerry is also pretty well known as a county that takes Gaelic Football particularly seriously, and near Castlemaine we pulled over and watched a local scratch game for a while. This was the first time I had seen the game played in the flesh and I was also hoping that we’d be able to see hurling, Ireland’s other great fast and physical ...

Dingle Peninsula

... Next morning we found out that Josh had been out with some strangers, and he bought that rock (which turned out to be hash) from them for $90, and told us of how he had tested it with them by rolling it into cigarettes, and how suave he felt for smoking it next to cops in the square. We caught the train to Tralee the next day, and then a bus to Dingle. The drive through the peninsula was the most incredible thing I had seen yet--green grass, much of it covered with ...
