Monday Salzburg
Ash got up at six when Katie messaged and hopped onto the internet for a chat. Left at 7:15 for the station, bought some breakfast at the bakery and validated our EU rail passes. Lovely train left promptly at 8:22, though people without seat reservations had trouble. Arrived in Salzburg and took the trolley bus to Mezzenzentrum where our hotel is. This turns out to be the exhibition and sports centre, with our hotel next door. Checked in then went back to town and spent...

... dry cereal with me to help with cravings haha), then went to St. Peter’s. It’s a monastery/cathedral/cemetery/catacomb combination at the foot of the fortress that’s built partly into the side of the hill. We walked around for a while, explored the catacombs, then went inside for some sketching.

Our last stop of the day, and of our visit to Salzburg, was going to be the Mirabelle Gardens ...
Salzburg, Austrian Alps, Austria cmvanackerwoke up with the worst hangover in the world I did think that I was going to pass out it was really really bad, Ian wanted to go and watch the Liverpool United game so we got ready and took the tram into the centre again as Marcus has told us about an irish bar in the centre that was good and was playing the football, as it was sunday all the shops where closed so we had a bit of a walk around first before the football and ended up ...
Salzburg, Austrian Alps, Austria traceybelle... of Austria, seems like a very interesting place, and we were both a little disappointed in hindsight that we were not able to stay there for a few days. The name of the place literally means "Salt Town", and was a very wealthy part of the world at one stage, as they mined salt there and before refrigeration, salt was more valuable than money, hence where the word 'salary' comes from.

Anywho, there are some really cool tours to do, you can go visit the underground salt mines ...
Salzburg, Austrian Alps, Austria dan-and-dee... in, you grab a mug off the shelf (half liter or full liter...your choice) and go to a cashier where you tell them what you want. You take the receipt from the cashier and go get your mugs filled up, then you find a seat in the main hall. Because you're not being waited on, it feels very relaxed and laid-back, almost like it is just a place to hang out, that just just happens to serve beer. Then when you're ready to eat, you walk down a large hallway and scope out the food options ...
Salzburg, Austrian Alps, Austria emyandwarren... dinner, so we walked back across the river on a pedestrian bridge and checked out more of the town. We finally had worked up an appetite and headed to a small beer stube Rick Steve’s recommends, but it was closed, like everything else! Duh! It Sunday! So it was back to the hostel and a round of beers. We tried to order food, but they had just closed their kitchen. Rats! We were starving by then, and I remembered there was a ...
Salzburg, Austria bigdhaas... br>
I am not very overwhelmed by the salt mine tour because it was conducted like a science center tour on the salt mining industry. It was interesting to a certain extent but perhaps it's because my retention memory for my geography lessons in the past did its part as well. Still there were nice bits like going down 2 slides, taking the tram into the tunnels and crossing an internal salt lake on a wooden platform (altho I wished they can cut out the laser display and let us enjoy the ...

Salzburg, Austrian Alps, Austria holertaAugust 26-Monday
We left Kitzbuhel at 8:30. There was a brief stop in Berchtesgarden, in Germany, at 10:00. Up on the side of the mountain, we could see Hitler's Eagle’s Nest. It was rather chilling to see that part of history. The bunker is now a restaurant. Our rest stop overlooked a valley filled with wonderful homes. What a view! Back on the bus and on to Salzburg. Time 10:35.
Berchtesgaden, Bavaria, Germany pemalak... weather matched the day…glorious! In the evening, we went to a Farmer’s Buffet for dinner. It consisted of all the types of food that the local folks have. It was ok, but not my cup of tea. After dinner, though, we were entertained by a wonderful trio of singers doing songs from the Sound of Music. Great fun was had by all. It was then time to turn in and get ready for more adventures.
