Crete - never been here before. So it was with much anticipation that we set off on our tour. Not as charming as Santorini, parts of it a bit like a non graffitied, tidier version of Athens - not bad but not really amazing either. Their economy is very strong and they could survive independently from the rest of Greece. First stop was the Palace of Knossos. Interesting. Our tour guide Lena was good. The scenery is quite spectacular - there are huge mountains, lots of rocks, some parts very arid, some parts very green. We see loads of fruit trees, laden down with fruit, olive trees getting netted for harvest, grapes on the vines and large numbers ...

... He didn't join her due to some bad hips.

Clad in the best hiking gear: backpack, poles, pants, shoes, hat. She said she's from the Czech Republic (lot of Czechs around: I met a very nice Czech couple at dinner last night). She guessed I was American: "Yeah, you can probably tell because I'm stupid, hiking Mt Ida with no supplies and in boat shoes" She laughed. "Maybe not stupid. More like very brave." Gosh she was cute.
