Iquique - ghost town

still in desert when arrived in Iquique, but weather´s improved as having the ocean on one side so that didn´t feel too dry all the time. went to Hamberstone for the famous ghost town - worker´s accommodations, factories, old machines, tennis court, cinema, hotel, and even a swimming pool!!! without a single human though. interesting.

Part 5: Taking to the skies from Iquique

... is the only hostal visible on the internet to travellers, seeking accomodation, who have yet to arrive in Iquique. It is spacious, clean, well organised and a mecca for practically all english speaking travellers passing through so makes for a very sociable and relaxed atmosphere. Furthermore, it literally is only a minute's walk from the beach! The city is Chile's ...

Beauty and Blisters.. the Patagonian experience.

... Trek. It also happened that there was a local food festival going on.. I took full advantage of it and ate my heart out. There were so many local specialties that it was hard to choose. Lots of BBQ meat, Kebabs, some coal cooked bread on a long wooden roller (the photos will do this one justice), awesome empanadas, etc.. The vibe was great and it turned out to be a nice experience. The 4 day Navimag trip was just as advertised.. lots of stunning ...

... while Miguel had the menu. Miguel thinks the food lacks taste, but I quite like it, and we've decided it may be due to Peruvian food having a bit more flavour, spices, etc. Baquedano is a nice little street which leads to Playa Cavancha, the best beach for swimming in Iquique. The beaches are packed with families, enjoying the holidays, from the Casino, all the way to the rocky areas that are not suitable for swimming. A few too many jellyfish for my liking, and ...

... beach to have a picnic. We bought two bottles of wine the previous day but we weren't going to touch them now. We ate a bit, then slept. Ryan and his friend Trent came and joined us a bit later. Then more people from the hostel came. We listened to the 12th Man and kicked the footy around on the beach. It was good afternoon but soon enough it was time to pack up, say goodbye to Claudio and Claudia and head to the bus terminal.

More like an excuse for 4 days on the lash!! As I was coming across form Peru to Chile I met Juana in the old jalopy of a car. Shes Peruvian and was heading to Iquique to see her brother Buddy and his wife Lucy who live and work there. We arrived in Iquique and went our separate ways but arranged to meet up the next day. Road Trippin' Iquique

... there for a while, so imagine I'd get stuck when gone further along - I had already travelled half the way from the Panamericana to Pica, taken a turn on an extremely hard desert track in search of something that not many people go to see, being stuck there in the absolute nowhere, in the middle of the Atacama desert - the driest place on earth - I turned around and went to Pica.

Once in Pica Oasis I stopped at a shop run by an older lady. I bought some souvenirs, chips ...
