Historical Traveler Reviews of Cathedral Hill Hotel San Francisco
I would probably stay there again!
from A TripAdvisor Member
My family stayed at the Cathedral Hill Hotel for 4 days last week. The room was large enough. The problem was cleanliness. The rug was very dirty. The beds were comfortable and we did not find the room noisy (our room was located on the garden side).
I would probably stay there again as the price was reasonable and the location convenient.
I liked Cathedral Hill a few years ago.

I was surprised to see the review by someone who thought the Cathedral Hill Hotel was noisy and not clean. I stayed there three or four years ago, and liked it a lot. I must have had an inside room, because I remember being amazed that I didn't hear any city noises. I also recall that the sheets were wonderfully smooth and the bed was comfortable. I'm kind of a "Princess and the Pea" type person, so if I think a bed is comfortable, it usually is. I don't recall a thing about the carpet or the bathroom or things not being picked up in the hall. The only reason I haven't stayed there since, is that my husband and I have found other hotels that are better located for our needs.
Don't stay here if you like clean!

We had booked a week's stay and were very disapointed. The carpet was absolutely filthy and the bathroom was so old it was difficult to tell if it was clean. Trays for room service with the dirty dishes and food remains were often in the hall for the entire day and on our last day, there were piles of dirty linens (towels and sheets) all over the hallways the entire day. It just didn't have a clean feeling about it.
There is one outlet in the bathroom--so you can't plug in a curling iron AND blowdryer. Plumbing is very noisy! It is on Van Ness which it is very busy, so it is loud all night.
The biggest problem to me was that it just didn't feel clean.

I stayed at The Cathedral Hill Hotel for 3 days in the first week of May. It has an excellent location, a helpful staff and a very good price (for San Fran). If you are looking for Ritz Carlton amenities, look elsewhere. It is a little gray around the edges, but if you are like me and only use a hotel room to sleep and shower this is the perfect choice. The money you save here could be well spent in many other places in San Fran.
If you are on the budget, this is great!

I used tripadvisors to decide which hotel to stay in San Francisco. To my satisfaction, it was exactly what we had expected and perhaps little bit more. It is a great hotel if you are watching your budget. It's clean and the room were actually larger than I had expected. The staff was friendly and helpful.
Granted, it is certainly not a 4 star hotel with lavish decour. Then again, it only cost me $90 a night. You can't get much better than that for a descent location and hotel.
It was my first time in a long time in SF. And it is so densely populated that we were able to walk and/or take the bus/trolley everywhere. SF's public transportation is great! A good tip for you if you are going there for a weekend. Get yourself a multi-day transportation passport. You can buy them in most of the hotel gift shops and etc. It's good for all buses and trolleys.
Get it renovated, and I'm there

Stayed here for two weeks last year. Everyone on the staff was incredible. Helpful, courteous -- truly interested in making our stay as good as possible. Unfortunately, the property itself is in serious need of a renovation. Entire floors of it are now being used as university housing, which is telling.
If they get it together with an upgrade, though, this will be a great place to stay.

This is an inexpensive hotel, but there is a reason. The pictures on the hotels website look much better than our room did. Older hotel with an even older bathroom. Very loud plumbing. Our neighbor was into 5:00am, long showers, so we were up with them. The hotel is on Van Ness, great location for seeing the city, bad location if you want a peacefull nights sleep. Van Ness is loud 24hours a day. Staff who worked at hotel were perfectly nice and helpful. Although there was never anyone at the concierge desk, so if this is your first visit to the city bring a guide book and map. Interesting that a hotel of this size has no access for the internet. You have walk about a mile to the nearest internet cafe to check your emails. I would not recommend this hotel to first time visitors to the city. If you are just staying for a day or two and want somewhere to rest your head than this hotel is fine.
Great Central Location

Stayed here for 4 days in November 2003.
Staff was very helpful.
Clean rooms.
Very good Breakfast Buffet.
Price was very reasonable for a SF hotel.
Check their website directly as they seem to have some good deals, even better than other travel sites.
I had parking with in/out privledges, breakfast buffet for 2 and a nice sized room for $119, excellent price for a 3 Star.
I will stay here again!
Great location, wonderful service

From August 1st through August 6th of this year, my husband and I were lucky to book a great rate through Expedia at this hotel. The check-in staff were very accomodating, the bell-hop/concierge staff was well-informed, helpful, and courteous (with one notable exception) and the room was comfortable, clean, and adequately appointed. Best of all its features was its location at Geary and Van Ness. Because we relied exclusively on public transportation, the location of Cathedral Hill was perfect. We'd stay there again even if we could not get the great rate that attracted us in the first place.

The staff was cool, the continental breakfast was the best thing, the room was clean and comfortable but the bathroom was not THAT good...
too small and not that clean...
