Very nice 4 star resort

After a ghastly ride across Sinai [I can see why Moses did not like the place] we arrived at the Cataract hotel within sight of the Great Pyramids. A very nice place, probably constructed during the British tenure there. Our tour leader, Mr.Ahmed was the best! He was our local agent from Desert Parmour Tours, Petra, Jordan. With a last minute change of plans, he worked all day to get us airline tickets from Cairo to Tel Aviv. Sinai Air does not use electronic ticketing and considers electroni...

Cairo at last!

The smell. One is struck by it immediately upon exiting the plane. It is a *******e to pin; spicy, smoky, dusty....it isn't offensive or foul, but it is certainly there. I arrived in Cairo the night before last. Unfortunately no one was at the airport to pick me up as arranged. Thankfully I was able to contact the company and find my way to the hotel. The cab ride was exciting as expected. The lines on the road were obviously painted for their aesthetic value as no one paid any attention to t...

Walk Like an Egyptian

... it was time to head for a closer look. We switched mounts and rode down to the tombs of the workers who built the pyramids and parked our horse & camel. We then climbed a small hill that took us to the base of the second Pyramid. At this point I think I heard our cameras say "oh ****". Photo taking aside it was amazing to be there. We went up to the Pyramid and touched it (supposedly lucky), marveled at these Wonders of the World, and enjoyed the ...

Wasted Days and Wasted Nights

... day.

We intended on walking to the Cairo Tower downtown, but because of our new location, have to travel by taxi both ways. Cairo Tower opened in 1960 and was completely redone and reopened in March 2009. It is Cairo's tallest building and the views from it are quite picturesque on a clear day. However, the winds are gusting and the sand is blowing in the distance, obscuring the view of the pyramids but we do manage to see ...

... We laughed about it, demanded a breakfast be included despite the late hour, and also insisted we get internet for free! We squeezed every last amenity out of them. Following a shower and quick sleep we continued on to Amman Jordan on full stomachs.

Arriving in Amman was just like any other airport where we had no idea how to get to our hotel, how much it would cost, what currency we needed etc. Usually we have faith that we’ll ...

Camels! Pyramids! Mummies! Check, check, check!

... his camera held ransom while on a camel and ended up paying $69 Euro to get it back! So the camel scams are not just a travellers legend but are alive and well.) Anyway, the whole group decided to do the camel ride and after taking some pictures at the panorama view point we all got on our camels and started our ride to the base of the pyramids. I was on one of the first camels to leave which was probably a good thing as it didn't give me time to get nervous ...

Yeah, Cairo

... trying to sell things on the streets, there is garbage everywhere, and the air quality makes modern LA seem like the High Sierras. It is not exactly the most pleasant city to visit, especially if one is coming from a westernized background. I would recommend going to another Egyptian city as quickly as one can see the Pyramids, Sphinx, a mosque and the Egyptian museum, which only would take a few hours. Glad we came, probably won't come back.

Museums and Mosques and Churches...oh my!

... and funnily enough we see a St Kerelos that looks familiar. There on the wall is his likeness..and at our local medical centre the same likeness hangs! We trot down the street back to the bus, its like 3pm and hot and there is wandering kitty on the street, so cute, so flea bitten..I still want to take one home :) There has been a man in suit riding with us on the bus and as we pull away from the church we appear to have a police escort. I ask Mohammed who the dude ...

... speech had some flaws though. Or perhaps not the speech itself, for it was merely a speech and not a "plan," though some are saying that was the big problem with it. I asked the guy at the front desk of the hotel what he thought about the speech and got the first negative response on Obama, whichwas actually more neutral than negative. The guy essentially said "Well, I like him, but I don't think he is going to do anything." The guy was very interested that ...
