Goodbye Lanka

... they are made for you. Whether you deserve their sacrifice is another matter. As for me, God knows I tried. · This is an edited version of an article published in the Sunday Leader editorial column on 11 January. Happy New Year!!

... ages.. though it was only small...we nearly capsized the boat trying to take pics of it! The boat trip was very interesting and we learnt where cork comes from, about poisonous fruits and different birds and fish. It's our last night tonight in Sri Lanka and i will be very sad to leave, it's a beautiful country and the people so accommodating and the storms are amazing! We've just had the most amazing storm ever.... better than any of the others we ...

City of War

Colombo is a city at war. Every street corner is home to at least 2 Sri Lankan Army soldiers, armed with automatic rifles (a derivitive of the AK-47 if im not mistaken), and protected by a barrier of sandbags. Every couple of hundred metres is stationed a massive anti-aircraft battery ready to shoot down LTTE warplanes should they appear once again over Colombo. The town is ...

Feeling the Heat

... The scale of the devastation was astonishing. Over 40,000 people were killed here, and a million displaced from their homes, while thousands of buildings were destroyed, along with at least half the island's fishing boats and significant sections of road and railway line - the total damage was estimated at well over a billion dollars. Prior to that fateful day, Anna (41) lived in Hambantota on the densely populated south coastline. As with many Sri Lankan's ...

... anyway. And, it is illgal to smoke in public, we didn't know this on a trip to Galle, when all the locals started shouting "Police Cigarrette" over and over and pointing at us, so low and behold policeman comes, smells cigarette??? and then driver explains don't smoke in towns?? thanks for telling us before hand!!!! AND............Its illegal to sell Alcohol in restaurants, cause we began to wonder why when you ask for a Beer or an Old Arrack (local spirit, made from ...

Going, going,gone!

... last week, her dad hit her mum on the head which meant she had to stay in hospital for a few days. It's awful to think what these kids see at home - to look at them, you would think they are "normal" children but we can never know what is really going on. There's a boy in preschool called Barnock who has behavioral problems (I think he has signs of AHD). I ...

Sri Lanka

... After the city tour with Jan, we went exploring - read: Find a bar. Found a nice bar with Ted & Danny Boy and enjoyed several Lion Beers, the local speciality to end the night. Next morning we met up with Mr Richmond, who would travel with us for the next week, & headed with Jan ...

Day4 Interreligious Dialogue,Bus.Mtg.,CulturalNite

... than just focus on what is interesting. Bernardeen: Interfaith dialogue. I feel we can't take faith out of context. We have to take into account globalisation, etc. The Asian woman is suffering, faced with poverty, the violations of human rights. We have to re-image the theology, morality, culture. Kochurani: We need a different look at interfaith dialogue. How do we re-imagine the woman beyond class and caste? Who is the emerging Asian woman. Pain/shadows are there ...

Pot-luck cuisine

... Granted, it appeared very near the Sri Lankan pot roast chicken with garlic curry on the menu, but it was very unlike it in taste (I can only assume, since we sent it back). Thaproban Restaurant: I ordered a 'Mama-Mia' pizza which listed among its ingredients, salami, olives and bacon. Rach ordered spaghetti marinara (seafood pasta to you and me). I got a pizza which definitely had tomato and cheese (and, I think, onions) but none of ...
