After breakfast Dave and I opted for an optional excursion which took us on the Ardeche Steam Train. We enjoyed a scenic ride along the Ardeche Mountains. The train took us to places that tour busses could not. We saw spectacular views of waterfalls, gorges and deep valleys. There also was an aqueduct built to store and provide water for the region. Day 28: The Gala Dinner at the Palace de Pape has been the outstanding highlight so far. Everyone dressed up and we were bussed to the gates of the Palace while our boat cruised slowly down through some locks to meet us at the end of the night. We walked up through the gates into the walled city and eventually arrived at the Palace. We had a guided tour as we made our way through various rooms, courtyards and hallways up ...

... where the vineyards are all grown from soil covered with river stones, where originally the river covered much of the area now cultivated under vineyards. The grapes are mainly dark purple giving specialty red wine. We also visited the castle ruins, destroyed by the retreating Germans in 1944 with views over the region and walked down into the little medieval town of Chateneuax-de-Pape. Sadly we hardly had time to poke our head into a couple of ...
