5th May Chania to Iraklio (Heraklion) Windy, rain at times 16 degrees After breakfast we caught a taxi to the main bus station to catch the bus to Iraklio. We were a little apprehensive but soon we were called to board a luxury coach. It also turned out to be the suburban bus and took three hours as it stopped to pick up and drop off passengers. The scenery along the way was lovely as we followed the coast to our left and had the villages, olive groves, sheep farms, vineyards and rocky hills ...
Heraklion, Crete, Greece souter6th May Iraklio Sunny 22 degrees Awoke to a bright sunny morning so headed down for breakfast (cereal, bread, meat and cheese, jams, yoghurt and honey and, we think, persimmons. We caught a bus into town and then another to Knossos Palace (ruins). It was very busy with many tourist groups and school excursions but still very interesting, if a little over-rated. There were parts of the ruins which had been recreated in the early 1900's by an archaeologist (Arthur Evans) who speculated about wh...

... the bus (3 hour journey) to the town near where we were booked in for two nights. We arrived in the town, Chania, to discover there were no buses to anywhere near our hotel and we would have to catch a taxi. To complicate matters, Mark discovered that we had lost the credit card. Big Bugger. We managed to scrape together enough cash to pay for the taxi to our apartment / hotel room, which was LOVELY, but unfortunately in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE! No cafes, no ...
Crete, Greece markandnoma2009... deck overlooking the harbor and old Venetian walls, as well as the Mt. Idi mountains. Not shabby - we even get a couple of chaises. Of course we won't actually be spending much time lounging around the hotel because we have to see the Minoans.
We went off in search of food and found a quiet taverna - crushed fresh tomatoes and olive oil on a baked brown bread; greek tomato, feta, pepper, and olive salad; and ...
... any discount for pensioners unless you're over 65), and we were greeted by a guide – Eva – she suggested that we would benefit from her services. She was right, without her knowledge and panache it could have been just another pile of rocks. It is a palace of the Minoan civilization that pre-dated the Greeks and ruled the Mediterranean with the world’s first navy. The myths about the Minoans (Minotaur, labyrinth) were probably inventions of ...

... with pictorial symbols spiraling out from the centre. No one has deciphered its meaning. A short way down the road brought us to Gortyna (Gortys), another famous ruin, and former capital of the Roman province of Crete, as well as north Africa. Other than the shell of the old basilica, Ayios Titos, the most impressive remaining ruin was the wall containing the Law Codes of Gortys. This wall of blocks is inscribed with an obscure, early Greek-Cretan ...
Heraklion, Crete, Greece noalarmclocks... spirit… sau asa am simtit eu, in cele 14 zile cat am fost in Grecia.
In Romania biserica ortodoxa e mai putin bogata in imobile, dar sper mai profunda in spirit. Desi face progrese.
We passed on the ships tour of Crete and went on our own. We got a taxi and agreed on a price for 3 hours of his time. On Crete, the taxis were very nice Mercedes sedans. Clean as a whistle and pretty new. The driver took us the long way up in the hills to the Palace of Knossos. The hills are just lovely, all covered ...
Iraklion, Greece pammyk... I have ever tasted in my life. I was the only one who could manage more than one sip, and that was only so I could work out what the hell it tasted like. Paraffin Oil I believe. So far I can not say that the Greeks are providing a fine choice of wines to sample. In fact I believe that the Indian are a step ahead at this stage in quality, which is a ridiculous concept. It is occurring to me that I predominantly hang out with girls while travelling. Perhaps it is because I offer them a ...
