... in the navy during the American War of Independence - having captured one of the towns trading ships, he demanded a ransom of 500 guineas...or else! The town coughed up but built the fort to ward off any further threats of this nature. The placard at the site tells a slightly different story, however. It claims that the sum demanded was £1000 and that the town refused to cough up and was therefore bombarded...interesting :-) I head off eastwards making for ...

... Amazingly there were more of these but they were demolished to make way for the ugly houses below. Now we are forced onto the road to drop down to Goodwick Quay and with no sign of any further footpath till the other side of Fishguard, we cheat and nip on a bus for the 1.7 mile journey into the town centre. Fishguard is a quaint place and we spend a little time poking around. First we visit 'The Invasion Tapestry' at the Town Hall. Completed as ...

I'm surprised I got here first...maybe Ian did decide the climb Garn Fawr after all? Half an ...

... the corner I am high above the coastline with its series of inaccessible little bays with jagged cliffs and home to seal colonies - there are quite a lot of young seal pups around at the moment. Another steep walk down on slippery shale and I arrive at Abercastle, a long narrow harbour inlet. Ian has just arrived on the bus and is waiting for me at the harbour wall. We climb the cliff path and take a short detour ...

... chamber. We also have fine views back towards Ramsey Sound. The Bishops and Clerks, a dangerous group of rocks for sailors, can be seen out to sea. The path here is somewhat vague meandering amongst heather and gorse but we keep the sea on our left and that seems to work. Up ahead, Periberry, a rocky mound with a steep path upwards. We climb up and over its shoulder. The puffing and panting is rewarding with spectacular views of the coastline ...
