The cool thing about arriving in a new place at night is that when you wake up you get to see it in a whole new light. This Mediterranean fishing port on the Istrian coast is even more charming by day. After a much needed leisurely start to the day we wandered down the polished cobbled stone streets in search of bikes. For 50 kuna (about 10 New Zealand dollars) each you can hire a bike for 5 hours. So that's what we did. The Istrian peninsula ...

Burano one of Venice's many islands is like Venice but a lot smaller and way more colourful. It reminded me a bit of La Boca in Buenos Aires. Brightly coloured buildings line the canals and although busy with tourists at this time of year, a lot quieter and it has a sense of calm about it. It is very charming. We do eventually wander to a beach with a bar and settle in for awhile but it isn't quite what we had ...

... so soon we were back out on the local roads making our way to the north and a couple of areas marked as natural preserves / national parks where we hoped we might find some sand for the boys. Instead we found ourselves on a road with two-way traffic and cars parked solidly on the right that went straight into a beach without the benefit of a place to turn around. I had the min-bus all the way to the end of that road before realizing that it ...

... pointing to Hum encourage us to continue. As we near what is probably the last turn to the town, we are turned away because the road is blocked by a big Hollywood movie production. The Lake is being filmed in Hum. The man turning us back tells us an alternate route and also suggests a great spot for dinner. We follow his advice. We never get to Hum because the restaurant is just before we get there and once we arrive there, we find no reason to go any further.
