... to scores of hippies flocking here in the late 60's to take up rent free residence in the caves used for burials in Roman times.
We parked at the beach, there were a couple of other tourist cars parked, but no sign of the hippies, we were expecting groups of wrinkled faces with grey ponytails to be here!
The entry fee of 2 € paid we started to explore, the first caves were not very ...

Once we had payed and discussed what good year it is for olive oil, we drove into Ieropetra, the economic centre of the green house industry. The wind has dropped quite considerably overnight, but the noisy sea has kept us awake, I am craving some peace and quiet! We are heading for Zakros gorge today, an easy 7 kilometre walk, if the river isn't too full! It's well signposted and we parked up at car park A, next to another camper from Austria. The owners were inside and waved to us. We made a packed lunch, got out our rucksacks and set off. The oath ...

... if the cove there us a house tucked back from the sea. We parked in front of the small lake where we could hear a loud animal sound, it sounded like a very loud cricket, after some research we decided that it was a Cretan marsh toad. We walked went for a walk through the olive groves, for an hour or so. When we got back we could hear several of the toads all making a loud noise, it sounded as if they were competing with each other. We thought they would keep us awake all ...
