    A Series of Unfortunate Events

    It just wasn't our day.

We wanted to set off around 12:30, switched on our engine, and discovered that it wasn't pumping water. So instead of setting off, we - well, Peter mostly - got himself soaked and covered in oil trying to work out what was going on. We left Faro in the fog, with the rain starting to fall. It was not a promising start, but we didn't have too far to go to Ria Guardiana, which forms the border between Portugal and Spain. Kind of a lazy day, after recovering from last night's Bob Dylan concert. We started out with a walking tour of Sao Bras de Alportel, a town that has nothing to do with an airport hotel which was my first thought. The strangest thing we saw there were the pictures of cute dogs pasted onto the white walls! Many examples of the typical Portuguese tiles, both old and new.

Our next stop was at the Milreu Roman ruins (4th century) ...

... steps to the old castle perched at the top of the town.

As we left town we drove down to the sea to take a look at the production of Fleur de Sel in Tavira. This expensive gourmet salt typically comes from France or Portugal, and represents the 'flower' or salt crystals that float on top of the salt pans, rather than traditional salt which is what is left when the sea water evaporates. Of course I bought some!
