Cradle of the Spanish Reconquest

... place that commemorates the taking back of Spain from the Moors by the Christians in the late 700s. Apparently, this Pelayo dude (very scary smelly mountain man-looking from the paintings around) decided enough was enough. [Guess the Moors were permitting too much education, freedom, civilization, art, science and the like.) So here we stand in the heart of all that made the way for throwing out of ...

La Playa Franca - Where the Mountains Meet the Sea

... saying. We were at La Playa Franca and it was BEAUTIFUL!! I call it “where the mountains meet the sea”. I have never seen anything like that before, so it was very amazing to me. The mountains were literally going into the sea. We spent an hour taking pictures and exploring and just soaking in all of the beauty.

The rest is just said with pictures.....

... the mountains following the river Cares. Although it is only possible to see the river occasional due to it being too far below the path it is possible to hear it. The walk is about 24 kilometers there and back. Approx 16 miles. We have never been on such a spectacular walk. The path clings to the cliff face hundreds of meters above the gorge and burrows through solid rock. It is very difficult to describe adequately.

Tomorrow 2 10 09 we move on.

Is every town in Spain lovely?

... We rolled into San Sebastian around 10 to find the office closed!! Fortunately, they had only stepped away for a break and after setting up we sat by the camper and enjoyed some rose and regular port.

... things go wrong too. I leave my computer in the first place we stay in Cudillero, a fishing village not far from the airport. Fortunately the owner is very trustworthy and holds it for me. But its meant a wasted day for Terry and I driving back to pick it up.

We choose a reasonable day to drive 2 hours to Bilbao. Arriving in the city we get so badly stuck in a traffic jam in the city, that I have time to leap out of the car and visit the ...

... coming out each of them flickering in a way that makes you think of store window displays at Christmas.  All but one of his other displays were made with gunpowder and there were several videos of him blowing stuff up.  It was like he was the Mythbusters, but found a different way to bankroll his obsession.  All in all it was pretty good.
On leaving the museum, we realized the cities must have a competition to see how hot they can make it.  It was really ...

Final Excursion to Asturias

... high, and I felt a good night ahead of me. We went to a bar not too far from the restaurant. There were probably 15 people in the bar, all sitting down, all slowly sipping on a drink. We all took the bar by storm, some of us enjoying Heinekens and other taking down some red wine. We began to get silly and start a dance party in the bar among the 12-15 members of our program to the American/Euro music that we all have grown to love. The 12-15 of us easily outdid every other ...

The end of the road

... Tito Bustillo. This deep cavern was discovered in 1968 by a group of young cavers and contains some of Spain's most significant Palaeolithic cave paintings, horses and reindeer adorning the walls as if painted yesterday. The caves themselves were also impressive, great halls, stalactites and stalagmites, the sound of rushing water. Our guide also pointed out small holes in the rock which lead to more caverns where there ...

Skiing in Asturias and Leon (San Isidro)

La Hermida to Riano

... cold. I was expecting to come upon a lake to my left about 6 or 7km before Riana. However no water anywhere. Th esun had come out again and I soon realised that the lake was severely evaporated! Clearly a major water problem in Spain. I stayed in a nice hostal that night and had dinner with an English couple who were driving to Murcia. Well fed and after a good conversation I took a bottle of beer up to my room. I was just about able to atay awake to finish it.
