Where to?

... arrives, probably in an hour or two.

Now I'm feeling a little remote. I'm pretty good at making the best of a situation, and dealing with the resources I have. As I haven't eaten yet today, I search a few of the nearby gardens for a bit of fruit to tide me over. Under the cover of early morning light I find a mature pomegranate tree loaded with fruit. I grab 5 of the plumpest fruits I can find and wander ...

Finally here...and it's an oasis

... shuttle bus to catch to Gatwick North terminal as the bus number and stop number printed on the ticket was completely different again to reality. Luckily, there were Network Express (bus company) on hand to save the day, but even then they didn't seem to know what was occuring and seemed to make things up as they went along anyway. We made the BA flight from Gatwick with plenty of time to spare so that's the main thing.

Another thing, I will also never again ...

Sea, sand and Sagres

... to make the (rather optimistic) 1km from the station seem like 5km. Finally we reached the end of a dusty road were our 4 star, 2 pool, 2 bar, 55 Euro bargain sat in all its air-conditioned glory. Whilst not exactly oozing charm, it was certainly good value. We're only here for the sea sand and Sagres afterall.

Tavira, a resort town, with a certain charm, a hint of Spanish chav and a short boat ride to the beach to dissuade the properly ...

Evora, Portugal, home of the chapel of bones....

So with nothing to do in Beja, we all caught the bus to Evora, famous for a chapel that is made completely of human bones. The whole town only took a few hours to see and the chapel was CREE-PY, yes, made of the bones of 5,000 people! After seeing the chapel, Anna and I wandered around town and found a small cafe to sit, read, and sip port in. We were watching the time and checking the bus schedule to make sure ...

Enchanting...yet Eerie Evora

An early morning, at least for us, and we were on our way by train about 2 hours outside of Lisbon to the Alentejo region of Portugal and the town of Evora, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. On our way to Evora we passed through groves of Cork trees. You will see from the photos - albeit taken from a moving train - a little bit about the Cork tree. You can see where the trunks are red in color - this is where the cork has been harvested. I believe it needs ...

Evora

Sean here: Bulimia. It's a scourge of young teenage girls in America, yet unknown in other parts of the world. It is less fun than just about any other dieting technique, yet also one of the more effective. It is also something that I considered doing for the first time in my life last night. Yesterday afternoon, just outside the city walls of Evora, Jeannie and I stumbled upon a hole-in-the-wall restaurant that specialized in ...

... tree re grows the bark with the help of a mold/fungus that infests the exposed portion but actually acts as a sort of salve. These trees then have blackened trunks from where they were harvested. Over the centuries of cork production Portugal has instituted strict procedures on how to preserve and control the reaping of cork from the tree so that each tree is tagged once stripped and cannot be touched again for another ...
