Today was our free day in Washington and we could do exactly as we pleased. I was not going to drag around with people, so I quickly said I would do my own thing. ... then said okay. When I came to retrieve my camera, I thanked him and he said "you're welcome, I took three photos for you [just in case the first ones didn't turn out okay]." And that was the first time I approached a stranger, exchanged words in Chinese, and my identity did not come into play. We just communicated. Not as the beautiful white girl with the humble Chinese person. Not as the Chinese person and the girl who surprisingly speaks decent Chinese. Just people!
