Day 10: Florence
... of Michelangelo, Galileo, Niccolo Medicci and Dante, as well as works by Donatello. On our way there, we walked through a little alleyway where school children were being let out for the day and families were there picking them up (no one was in a car; everyone walked or rode bikes). Day 9: Florence
Today was a full walking day around Florence. The crowds here are worse than they've been anywhere so far, but it may be because it was a beautiful Sunday and it's a small city, so it feels more cramped. We started off by walking to the Duomo, which is the domed focal point of the city, with a tower, cathedral and baptistery. The cathedral was in mass when we were there, so we decided to come back another time to see the inside, ...

We then went on to visit three of the local wineries of San Gimignano. Our favorite was San Daneto where we bought some wine for the last week in Italy. Although the proprietors at the wineries we visited were friendly, the wines were good and the vistas were spectacular, Anne and I both agreed that they're not ...
Swirl, sniff, slurp...
... was downright impossible. A sprightly 80 year old, he only spoke Italian. Whilst the other winery was quite big, this one only bottles 1,000 cases a year. Tiny! Here we tried another five wines including a white table wine, a Montalcino red, and three different Brunello styles. We also got to down shots of Grappa. Quite frankly our group (including Canadians and Americans) were pretty tipsy.

Armed with umbrellas and maps we headed off to San Gimignano and Volterra.
Oh, did I mention the Florence marathon? No..well we had that to contend with too. I spoke with participant #9001 who was cloaked in a lovely lime green garbage bag. He thought 10,000 marathoners were in attendance. Moving green bags were everywhere! It gave the appearance of 2 giant caterpillars flanking the sides of the Arno ...
