I made it!
... squishy dirt but that's just being petty. We quickly made our way back down to be thwarted by a turn in the path. By now, I was just glad to not be going straight up a mountain side. Eventually the path rejoined the original path, like it was that easy, & we headed back to the parking lot on the other side of Laguna Canyon Road.
