At 9pm every evening, a ceremonial firing of the canons occurs across the bay at the Fort of San Carlos de la Cabaña to commemorate the closing of Havana's city gates that occurred every evening in colonial times. After our force stopover in Cancun we were finally the last flight out of Cancun airport and arrived in Havana at 01.15 hours. The immigration official stamped our entry onto the loose visa without asking, recognising that if we had a Cuban stamp in our passport we would not be allowed into the USA.
