It really did feel like we were living in the 50's or 60's (once the odd Kia or modern bus was out of vision) - old vintage cars roaming the streets, horse and carts a common form of transport (particularly outside Havana), locals relaxing out the front of their homes chatting away, often with music blaring, old folks salsa dancing the night away, locals queuing to use pay phones, and a mix of both ...
... in Havana, the three of us still jumped a mile during dessert because of El Cañonazo. At 9pm every evening, a ceremonial firing of the canons occurs across the bay at the Fort of San Carlos de la Cabaña to commemorate the closing of Havana's city gates that occurred every evening in colonial times. To enhance the experience, the lights go out in all of Old Havana and there is complete silence—except, of course, for the canons.

... the morning we left (in fact we didn't see them and there was no breakfast), but all in all, a reasonable start to the casa particular journey. Food: The food options here were surprising as it seems that the main cuisine amongst the locals is pizza, hamburgers, white rolls with jamon and cheese and even hot dogs! Not the typical rice, chicken and beans that we expected (and craved!). Finding a local type place serving authentic creole cuisine was an interesting ...
