... very warm, muggy day so John and I whipped off our shirts and strolled along the Malecon next to the bay which was very inviting to jump in however was told the bay wasn’t fit for swimming and perhaps not a great idea. We purchased some supplies from the local supermarket (very common for these shelves to be empty, or stocked with hundreds of the same item – trade embargo to blame, really hope Obama changes this before another moronic Bush takes over the ...

Lazy day in Punta Gorda, Cienfuegos

A travel blog entry by antheamac on Nov 13, 2014

After another large breakfast, good again, we decided we would investigate what was around locally and try to find an internet friendly place, we felt we should at least make another attempt to contact our families. The hotel Jagua we were told would have this. On the way we came across a man peddling his fruit and veg to the locals. There was an intriguing potato looking veg which it seemed was not a potato but not dissimilar. On the way down to the hotel was a small park ...

... and around 7 pm we arrive in Cienfuegos. It is dark and because the road has so many holes and there is no light on the streets, we really have to be careful. Also, there are people coming and going on foot, bike, horse or cart and have no light either.

Cienfuegos is a city on the seaside at it has about 400,000 inhabitants. We are staying at a "Casa Particular" or Private home nicely located ...

After a one hour bus ride from Trinidad we arrived in Cienfuegos. Also oppressively hot, a tall, anglo looking man stood emphatically holding a sign above his head saying "Lauren Y Geremi", we were staying with him in a house nearby. Up a very steep marble staircase our room was right off the terrace facing the street. After a lesson in damas (checkers), from our host Rafael, he had us play a tournament of sorts making sure he explained all the rules and that we could fully enjoy ...
