Woke up to church bells ringing across the lake... There is a beauty and peace here that is impossible to explain....The weather is not so good today so we decided to take a drive to Como. The roads were narrow and windy. They seemed to go on forever! Views along the way are spectacular! When we arrived in Como we attempted to walk around the town centre but it was just too wet! Turned back for a cosy afternoon in... with a good ...

Having given Venice some thought and knowing how difficult it is with luggage we have decided to repack so that we just have a change of clothes and what we absolutely need for Venice and we will check our suitcases in Milan and pick them back up on our way to the Cinque Terre. My suspicion is that it's the same scenario as what's happened to the mountain villages of Umbria: at one time people lived off the land here, perhaps herding goats and growing food on small plots of land, but over time the easier life of the cities and plains was too enticing... people moved away and forgot their village and way of life. I ponder this as I continue on up the trail, pausing at ...

... and rougher until in disappears altogether alongside the river... and I find myself heading back to San Giagomo a third time, feeling quite frustrated with myself. And then, when all seemed hopeless, I spot the markings of the trail Splugenpass trail in between the houses... Yep, it's for real this time... I cross an arch stone bridge, pass a couple of other hikers that confirm, yes, this is the right way and then plunge into the forest once ...

1688. Gateway to the Upper Alps

Day 274 4 hrs, 3 kms Chiavenna is my Gateway to the High Alps--from here I go from following low altitude relatively flat valleys with snow--if visible--very far away... to a steady steep climb up over formidable passes that throughout out much of history were a daunting challenge for travellers and traders. Chiavenna is a also my first full city in several days, and after just wandering past quiet little villages it feels great to be ...
