... a wedding, there are the cloisters, therefectory, Chapter house, wine cellars including a wine making museum. The hotel building is in the same style as the monastic buildings, and our room is spacious and pleasant. The staff, however are all women who seem the have undergone a charisma-ectomy. The appear to be inexperienced and perhaps overworked. Dinner at the hotel restaurant is unremarkable. More to come + ...

... coffee in the village of Montegallo, and lunch in Montemanaco after a stiff 4km climb from the valley below. Then we descend through the beautiful village of Montefortino, arriving finally at Amandola, the towering arc of the Sibillini Mountains a constant presence. ... rather unattractive modern concrete buildings lining the main road. Then the real climbing starts. The sign warns of 5 "tornanti" (switchbacks) but fails to mention steepness. I don't have my GPS but I reckon the next 5km is steeper than Zig Zag Road (13%) which is a real challenge with loaded bikes. We are riding at walking pace, and Helen actually walks quite a bit of the next 10km. After the 5km ramp we pass the village of Gualdo and ...
