... is quite steep, and Helen walks some of it. A bus load of walkers have been disgorged from a bus, and are high above us on the slopes of Mt Vettore. The view from the pass is magnificent. Jackets are on for the descent because there is a chill in the air and we bomb down with the enormous cliffs of Vettore looming up into the clouds on our left. We continue through dense forest, most of the time in shade on a winding undulating quiet road, ...

We think we'll probably never come back here, so we decide to spend a day taking it all in, and resting tired muscles. The breakfast buffet is varied, and includes large bowls of home-made yoghurt and ricotta da pecore. ... Norcia is busier and includes a number of longish tunnels which are no fun on a bicycle. And even though we have ridden the Valnerina before, it is so stunning we look forward to seeing it again. As we join the main road we stop for coffee and cake at a bar in the village of Piedipaterno, a collection of stone hoses clinging to the cliffs above the road. The first really good coffee so far. I use the iPad to book accommodation in Visso. The road is ...

... zone then it looks like the other side of the moon, black, ash.

Drove as far as we could, got out of the bus & walked around, toilet, then tried some Etna firewater & lemonchello schnapps, back on the bus down a little, looked at the cafe that the 2001 lava stopped right by the window. Walked to the top of the crater that was created at that time, huge hill, felt that every 1 step up was followed by 5 down, great view ...
