On our last full day here, we tackled the Vatican City. And for the smallest state in the world, there's certainly a lot to do in it.

We started with Castel Sant'Angelo. It was the one used in the Dan Brown movie. We had an audio guide, so were able to listen to all the history of the castle. It's been a fortress, prison, Pope residence and lots of other things. Very interesting.

We were taken in through the security area, missing out all the queues which stretched across the square, and into the lower level of the church to pick up an audio guide. Rome is very busy at the moment with huge numbers of tourists , no doubt brought out by the hot sunny days.

Next on the list of Roman buildings is the museum and crypts of the capuchin monks. The "highlight" being a series of 7 rooms or crypts that are decorated in human bones. From the pelvis room to the skull room to chandeliers all made from bones under subdued light it was certainly an experience !!
