Corn Islands, goodbye Nica

Hey all! so greg and i finally made it out to the infamous corn islands... We made reservations via internet (most reservations with the small island are internet since they don't really have reliable phones) and just went out there hoping they had space for us. We took the very early flight out on La Costena for $164 and then took a panga or a boat with a motor out to the small island. The ride on the boat was pretty dry, just our bodies got wet as opposed to all our bags (which is apparentl...

we took a plane to bluefields and then on to big corn island where we took a taxi to the dock and then a water taxi 30 min ride across the ocean to little corn island this place is beautiful. they had a special going on if you stayed 3 nights or more the deluxe cabana was 50 a night (more than double our other places) but well worth it. our view was amazing and im not sure it gets better - the european staff at the hotel was amazingly terrible but that is another story since im already back i...

death by a panga

I think I'm dead. I decided it would be a good idea to head to Nicaragua's Caribbean coast to see the Corn Islands. I knew the weather would be diecy, but that did not prepare me for the panga (a small 25-30' open air boat that transports people from Big Corn to Little Corn). The flight from Managua ($165 return) was uneventful and the taxi was quick to arrive at the dock. The people speak more english, but it's laced with creole so it's still very difficult to understand. Shortly after 4:30 ...

... there were no launchas to take us across to Little Corn so we spent 1 night there before finally arriving on Little Corn the following morning 4 days after we had set off.

The Corn Islands are 2 Caribbean Islands located about 70km's off the coast of Nicaragua. Little Corn is 17km's from Big Corn and is about 1.6 sq km's with no roads or cars so its about as remote as you can get and pretty close to paradise..

The first day there we headed down to ...

A little piece of paradise. In the rain.

... us.

On our first day there, John and I took advantage of the clouds to skip the beach and head out diving. One of the dive shops that we had talked to was heading out that afternoon to a place known for having a population of nurse sharks. Sure enough, within the first few minutes of the dive, we had found our first nurse shark. For those who aren't familar with the species, nurse sharks are among the ...

More sun, sea, sand and island livin'

... got into the front, laden with boxes and cakes. The taxi didn’t start so crowds of people started pushing the cab, I had all my luggage with me and Brad was in the boot/ trunk of the car which wasn’t locked, anyone could have opened it and absconded with Brad, but no one did. Everyone was laughing, running towards the struggling cab to help push and it was a snapshot moment of the goodness of human nature. The cab started and we both were ...

Diving and hanging out

I've had an amazing week here on Little Corn Island!! It's such a cool place, and quite different from anywhere I have been before. A few little details...they don't really have police here, unless you count the guy who wears a "SECURITY" shirt, works as a fisherman, and carries a gun. Technically, he is the "police presence" here, and things seem to be running smoothly. A few years ago, they had some problems with crime, but apparently the locals decided to kick people off the island ...

... with some great snorkeling and fishing just in front. The first couple of days we didn't do too much but walk the island and sit on the beach. We soon found out why they call this the rainy season. It rained almost everyday, or it was cloudy for the majority of it. So sadly to report the awesome tan I expected before leaving isn't going to pan out. By the third day we started doing something (I was starting to ...

Big Hospitality on Big Corn

... polished off 3 or 4 bottles of rum (drunk on the rocks with a splash of water.) I've held my own for several hours with them, and they've accepted us both as part of their group now, which can be a pretty dangerous thing! They are so welcoming and generous, though, that we had to stay another week just to enjoy the hospitality a bit more, and try to pay them back a little. After one Sunday of drinking beer at the ...

Corn Islands - beachy goodness

... we were warned of miserable people and pick pocketers aplenty. We stayed out of town a bit near a large shopping mall called Las Americas. We decended upon the mall to stock up on a few calories at burger king, since the meager diet of rice and beans we had been consuming for the previous 2 weeks, wasnt cutting it. Rice and beans combined with excercise i can report is excellent for losing weight. After shedding 19 pounds, i feel like an 8 year old ...
