... in a different language! A rather civilised end to an eventful day.
The carnival atmosphere was great. I wish we celebrated it in the UK. I suppose some places have carnivals in the summer but this particular one is to celebrate before the start of Lent. Just about everyone gets involved and it's a big occasion in Spain's cultural calendar. But we shouldn't get rid of Pancake Day, that would be a mistake. What we need is a Pancake Carnival!

... which team can finish a can of squirty cream first by spraying it in everyone's mouth! They're a very lively bunch and lots of fun. Everyone there is very welcoming, from the little toddlers who shyly say hola, to the teenagers who want to test out their English on a native, to the old ladies who hug me and pray that God will bless me. They're good for the soul!
But I had to leave as Mireya was expecting me. I got really lost trying ...

... through the kitchen window. The verdict was that Asturian sidra is OK but British cider is better - I'm afraid I have to agree! We also had chorizo, sangria and turrón. Turrón is a nougat sweet eaten at Christmas and is available in a vast variety of different flavours. The day before they left we had a trip to the supermarket so they could take some more home with them! Dad didn't starve, I'm happy to report. Although he came close when we were in Gijón - it shouldn't ...

... I don't feel Christmassy at all. There's plenty of festive spirit around with the Christmas lights in the streets, Christmas songs playing everywhere and the really lovely Nativity scene set up in Cathedral Square. I've come to the conclusion that it's because I'm not with my family and friends. Christianity aside, it's the people you love who make Christmas, and I won't feel festive until they arrive!

... so it was really sad on Monday. We learned Christmas words Monday, and then they drew pictures that went with the words. Their drawings were so cute! Before I left, each student came up to me and said "This is for you. Thank you very much." Maria, the teacher, had to help them a little but it was so cute! Each of them drew me a picture ...
