Voyage to the North

... crackers to feed to the pet goat, who is called Archie. Archie is the only white goat, and he is older than all the others, and is not up for being served on a plate. He is quite clever, and comes when he is called, and absolutely LOVES his Ritz crackers...as you can see! I found this to be quite humourous, and it made me think that someday I would like to have a pet goat who eats Ritz crackers...
Next we saw the other goats (there are some very cute ...

A Surprise Visit

... somewhat explains the blank stares when I asked for frijoles), and within minutes of asking the Comedor lady about Emma (a.k.a. la gringa que cuida a los perros), we were on a motoconcho heading to her house. Surprise!!

I felt bad dropping in on her unannounced, but it was great to see her. We knew we were at the right house when five dogs bounded out to greet us. Emma arrived in Cabrera more than two years ago with virtually no Spanish, but ...

Fancy-Pants on the Cheap

... were shocked - shocked! - that the terrace-level rooms were $15 for the two of us. The rooms are basic and the terrace isn't well-maintained, but we walked out of our room to a wide expanse of ocean and a little beach off to the side. Really, the hotel made my week.

As soon as we checked in we headed back out for Playa Grande, supposedly one of the prettiest beaches in the area. It's hard to know how ...

The last day in tropical paradise

... story, as we see the "little chef" living among humans in his quest to fulfill his love for creating delicious food. We root for the little guy during the course of his travails and cheer for him at the end of the story, which we hope - and want to believe - could really, actually happen in real life. He is such a lovable and dear creature - he reminded me of Anthony - and his example shows that even a rat must not be regarded lightly ...

A glimpse of sunlight!

... was just Leanna, me and our dad. Leanna, again, wouldn't go swimming, so she was, again, going to be the documentarian of the whole experience. She took video and still photographs of the adventure of my dad and me in the burly, choppy waves. It was quite an experience! In fact, it reminded me of the waves in Hawaii when I was 4 years old, with the surf crashing upon the shore. My dad held my hand and we walked right into it and got drenched ...

The land of "Beyond" and fun at the beach

... I didn't want my hair braided (I like the braiding but I think it would look bad on me), and then she said something like "just let me do one" (as she was already grabbing my hair), so I didn't fight her on it, thinking that she was giving me a promotional free example of the braids and that at least she would be satisfied that she got to do something on me. She quickly and deftly braided a string of my hair and put a few beads at the end, and then she put ...

My Tranquil Mountain Village

... that the road turned to total mud and we couldn't go anywhere. The things I take for granted at home, like taking a hot shower and snuggling under my down comforter when it is cold out, are just not possible here. Huddling in a damp, chilly house with two sheets and a half of a blanket just doesn't give you the same comforting feeling. Everything was just damp - my clothes, my towel, my spirit. Just kidding. Actually, my spirits were greatly lifted by a care package from my ...
