From the Earth to the Moon

We arrived in Calama for the first of our pre-booked (and pre-paid for) tours and were pleased to see someone holding a sign up with our name on it. Always a relief to know that you haven't handed money over to a fraudster!

The drive saw us going passed the huge copper mine of Chuquicamata and upwards in altitude towards San Pedro de Atacama.

San Pedro is a town where the gringo trail is so well used it has practically been tarmacked - the plus side to this is lots of places to...

The mighty Atacama

... stop and just a couple of hundred metres away it´s completely silent if there´s no wind. Mountains and glaciars have always been my favourite landscape to explore and so on, but this is my first desert and I have to say it´s surprisingly good.

So anyway, ¿what did I get up to? Day 1 I went to my hostel but there was no bed free for my to dump my bag next to until people checked out a couple of hours later, so I went to sconce the town and assess some of the tour ...

Walking on the Moon

Our lovely smooth road led to customs and then a few laps of the town untill we chose a hostel right by where we had got off. I was a little gutted to see a certain group who had been fairly obnoxious and rude on our bus also staying in our hostel, but by the end of our stay they had opened bottles of wine for us, lent us a charger and given us cooking ingredients, so all was forgiven.

San Pedro was a quaint oasis village which over the last 15 ...

The Atacama Desert

... the sun set over this lake and it was spectacular. Especially the andes in the background which turned different shades of red as the sun went down. We enjoyed this with a few Pisco Sours so it made it even more special!!!! And to finish the day off we got back and had a BBQ in the hotel garden and a few beers. Great day!!!!

We are off to the seaside tomorrow but it is a 17 hour night bus..... arrrggggghhhhh.

Blog you later

Kate and Mark

Taltal to Tocopilla

... and then to Tocopilla. What a **** hole! Couldn´t get accommadation in a hotel come brothel and it was 7.00pm. Head to Iquique 230km north or try and find somewhere to camp, easier said than done. Camped 80kms further north where there is a resturant that served local fish and they had rooms out back, food was excellent the room was ordinary but at 9.00pm I wasn,t complaining.

No more chicken and rice!

Purely a destination of convenience, the point at which we skip a couple of thousand miles of bus journey and take the sensible option of a flight. Iquique is a bizarre town that feels like it is in the wild west era. The overnight stopover was however vastly improved by great sushi!!!

Bit of beach time

... do. So I spent most of the day reading in a cafe or working on the internet. Which is the same thing I did the next day before it was time to catch my SUPER PLUSH bus to Santiago. I decide to treat myself and went with the deluxe sleeper where the bus rocked me to sleep and I was very refreshed by the time I got to Santiago. Really not too exciting of an entry... but I wanted to document it anyway. Sorry.

Iquique Chilie. Warm weather cold water big waves

... double decker much like the last bus we were on very comfy. After settling in and falling asleep for about 2 hours there was a massive bang and the bus started to fill with cold air. It was like a bad dream I mean it couldnt possibly happen again. We got off the bus to find yet again a busted window on the 2nd floor there was glass everywhere. We again had to wait around in the cold for another bus which was twice as ...
