... Maple Leafs 3-0. Funny tthat we had to come all the way to Mexico to watch hockey. Karl ordered a beer and good fortune was on our side - it was 2 for 1! After the game we played a card game they translated for us as 'One'. Clever Karl figured out they were talking about Uno.
Settled in well and are off to Cuba today.
Yesterday I witnessed the coolest thing ever. There is a tortugranja here on Isla Mujeres. They are a conservationists effort to help the ever-endangered sea turtles. Though they don't always have the proper supervision for the turtles at their facility, they are raising awareness on the island about sea turtles. That said, yesterday one of my students told me that they would be releasing baby sea ...
Isla Mujeres, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico la_morena... confirmed in Cancun. The amount of hand soap at the hostel drastically increased following this news. Now we were practicing increased hygiene. The next level of fear for the hostel. The next would be facemasks, then evacuation. Friday, May 1st, Mexico declared a 5 day shutdown to try and decrease the spread of the flu. This is when I was finally directly affected by this stroke of bad luck....or happenstance. Historical sights were shutdown, public ...
Isla Mujeres, Mexico tex25Guten Tag aus Weimar!
I hope that this email finds you warm and healthy. It has been a few months since I last wrote and obviously a lot has happened since. Tragedy, trips, holidays, friends, and the cold dark of winter. This will probably be a long email so bear with me. For those of you that regularly read these, sorry I haven't written in so long.
After Halloween the election events were upon us. Germany is nuts for Obama, so ...
... of crime in Guatemala City and probably in other cities as well, but North American cities are not experiencing any shortage of crime either, be it on the streets or in their schools. During my entire stay, never once did I feel threatened in any way, and I traveled on chicken buses and camionetas, hiked in remote areas, stayed in some basic accomodation, ate in local eateries and shopped in markets. Of course, travelers must be wise and take the obvious precautions ...
Cancun, Mexico tipep... clear water. That just reminded me: I have never seen a live coral reef. Wherever I've snorkeled before they were dead. For you divers out there - you can visit the "Manchones" (=Cross of the Bay), which is a sunken cross with a mermaid carved out in the middle. The cross has been sunk as a tribute to all the men and women ...
Isla Mujeres, Mexico schlossie... for, so I'll be back before I leave. I think I'll check out the turtle sanctuary tomorrow though, if I can wake up at a reasonable hour... Oh by the way, go back to Wednesday's entry and see the "Beam of heaven" I was rambling on about if you are interested. Just got a pic from on of the guys I was diving with, and I've weaved it into the text! (I know, very advanced...heh, heh! You can totally see the beam!)
Isla Mujeres, Mexico psykokristin... to the other side of the bar. The bottles were then placed in front of sleeping beauty. My confusion soon vanished when they and four other members of staff surrounded the hapless Alfredo demanding payment for the empties in front and demanding it NOW. Alfie, to his credit, simply rose from his slumber, downed his lager and performed the globally recognised raised arms "what!" gesture before returning to the land of nod. Good man! So far, so good.
Cancun, Mexico guscaesar... to catch our next flight! This would have been okay, had an airport lady not sent us out of the exit instead of the connections door...resulting in 20 minutes spent frantically running around the airport begging to be let on the flight to finally arrive last on the plane - he he! After that all went smoothly (oh, except for turbulence when I considered writing a will and Attique considered what skills he could bring to the Lost ...
Isla Mujeres, Mexico little_lisa... suite so to speak and the gaps between the floor and the ceiling made sure everyone knew quite how sick I was. A little note to the angel Gabriel (coincidence or not but that was his name) and his Peruvian friend for even saying at one point that they didnīt hear anything all night. I spent the next two days on my back with Amanda playing Yes 5 on my chest and drinking beer and smoking fags in the doorway so as to not make me feel left out....isnīt she a honey!
